i've been able to configure the program in order to capture from my vcr, which i didn't manage with other programs: great. problem is when i stop the capture and run the avi file that i've saved, i can only see lines and the sound is kind of normal at the beginning but then it accelerates until unintelligible. i supposed this had to do with codecs. i've installed the ffdshow codecs pack but there's been no change. i would appreciate some advice since i'm totally lost. thank you! |

some advise (important things are marked in red color):
INSTALLATION OF CODECS FOR VIRTUALDUB: (if you installed 32-bit version of VirtualDub then also install 32-bit versions of the video- and audio-codecs) (if you installed 64-bit version of VirtualDub then also install 64-bit versions of the video- and audio-codecs)
Video codecs (for VirtualDub you need "Video for windows" compatible codecs): - x264 : http://sourceforge.net/projects/x264vfw/ - Xvid : http://www.xvid.org/Downloads.15.0.html - DivX : http://www.divx.com/en/software/divx-plus/codec-pack
Audio codec: - Fraunhofer MPEG Layer-3 : http://www.looprecorder.de/tut_l3codec.php (( audio-codec installers thanks to dloneranger: - Lame MP3 : http://dl.dropbox.com/u/17024916/MyUploade...pLamex64x32.zip - AAC : https://dl.dropbox.com/u/17024916/MyUploade...acm_X86_X64.zip - AC3 : https://dl.dropbox.com/u/17024916/MyUploade...acm_X86_X64.zip
CAPTURING PROCEDURE: - connect the capturing device to your pc - start VirtualDub and click File > Capture AVI...
- in the Device menu: . choose your input device
- in the Video menu: . choose Preview (and not Overlay). . set the Capture filter - this corresponds to your video standard (for example PAL_B for Belgium) . verify the settings in Preview pin... (for example: Framerate = 25.000 / Color = YUY2 / Size = 720 x 576 . Levels > set Brightness and Contrast . Compression > choose a video-codec and its settings . Cropping (do not crop - to help avoid dropping frames) . Filter chain (do not set filters - for the same reason)
- in the Audio menu: . check Enable audio capture . check Enable audio playback . Compression > No compression (or choose an audio-codec) . Audio Source > Audio tuner . choose your capturing device
- in the Capture menu: . Settings > Frame Rate > this should correspond to the frame rate in Preview pin... (if not than File > Exit capture mode and restart it via File > Capture AVI...) . Preferences > check the items that you want to see in the side panel . Timing > uncheck everything (to have a minimum of dropped frames) / Resync mode = Do not resync / Audio latency = Automatic (30)
- in the File menu: . Set capture file... to set the capture file name and destination
Now press F6 and capture for a few minutes. End the capturing process with the ESCape key.
File > Exit capture mode.
Finally, open the recorded file and take a look at the result. |

everything done as Abrazo told me. audio is ok but the video is in "fast forward" (excuse my poor terms). so the image speeds up until frozen while the audio continues up to the end, at normal speed. been experimenting with TIMING / and the sync options with no result. thanks again for your prompt and comprehensive help, c |

It would be interesting to check/activate "Average rate" and "Frames dropped" in VirtualDub (while in capture mode) > Capture > Preferences.
Via that way, you can verify if there are 25 (or more) images per second being recorded while capturing.
If there are less and you probably have a (large) number of dropped frames, then there must be a bottleneck somewhere: > incorrect compression settings > hard disk that cannot follow > other programs that are actif and take up cpu time
You must see it as if video is recorded on one track and audio is recorded on another (track). There must always be the required number of video/images in relation with the audio to keep both in sync while playing. If there are less (what at this moment is certainly the case), then the video will be much faster at its end then the audio.
You can always verify the length of video and audio by opening the resulting file and clicking File > File Information... |

i can't make it work. let's see if this helps:
1. THESE ARE THE compression settings / configure preset: medium tuning: none profile: auto Level: auto zero latency: checked rate control: single pass-ratefactor based CRF ratefactor: 23.0 output: VFW x264 virtualdub hack: checked encoder 264 decoder and AVI mixer: libav
2. THIS IS WHAT I GET WHEN CAPTURING (i printed the screen but couldn't paste it here) Frames captured: 65 total time: 0:19 time left 12:04:42:29 total file size 3371KB disk space free 182,19GB CPU usage 194%

audio size 2523KB average rate 43302,07hz relative rate 43302,07hz data rate 133KB/s compression ratio 1.0:1 resample +0,000st
3. THIS IS THE FILE INFO (it corresponds to another video but i captured it with the same settings)
VIDEO STREAM frame size: 750x576, 25.000fps, (40000ms) length: 232 frames (0:09.28) decompressor: x264vfw / H.264 MPEG-4 AVC codec number of key frames: 4 min/avg/max/total key frame size: 850/21027/39780 (83k) min/avg/max/total delta frame size: 0/7856/34549 (1750k) data rate: 1617 kbps (0.30% overheard)

If you are still there willing to help me thanks again. c.

It is strange that > cpu-time is heading up to 194% > you only get an average frame rate of < 4 frames per second > you do not have 'dropped frames' (I should expect there should be...) I wonder if you see the preview of the VCR playback ?
I do not have an immediate idea what you could do, but maybe: > try with an other encoder (Xvid) > not choosing Preview ; rather choose 'No display' in the Video-menu > once check/activate the VCR checkbox via Video > Capture filter...
You can also do a short test with Screen capturing (Device > Screen capture) and setting Video and Audio to "no compression". Does that capturing also have such a low frame rate ? |

> try with an other encoder (Xvid) I HAD DONE BEFORE. > not choosing Preview ; rather choose 'No display' in the Video-menu SAME RESULT > once check/activate the VCR checkbox via Video > Capture filter... SAME
I only managed to capture properly by no compressing at all. I wonder if I can compress the video afterwards. If that is possible, I guess I'll have to capture little chunks that way and then compress them... I'm about to give up... thank you for your support! c |

It is not a problem to compress it afterwards. (The main goal of compressing is making files that take up less diskspace, while not loosing to much quality.)
> You can open the captured (uncompressed) AVI in VirtualDub, > set Video-menu to Full processing > choose a codec for video (Video > Compression) > set Audio-menu to Full processing > choose a codec for audio (Audio > Compression) -- remark: if audio was already compressed during capture, then you may set the Audio-menu to Direct Stream Copy > do a File > Save as AVI.
