hi there
i use virtualdubVCR (http://www.virtualdub.net) to capture with timer when i'm not by the computer.

1. i've been using both v1.7 and 1.9. when i was using it on my win98se, it was working perfect, but now, on my XP-pro, if i select more than 1 item with the timer, then the 1st cap works ok, and the file is there, but when the snd cap starts, it deletes the 1st cap file.. sad.gif. of course if i rename the file after the 1st cap, the 2nd cap doesn't delete the 1st cap, but then again, i use the timer since i don't wanna babysit the pc. has anyone noticed this issue, and/or have a solution?

2. with the same virtualdubVCR, does anyone knows of a solution to change the cap settings (compression) between the caps? (or another virtualdub bases solution to capture with timer with different compression settings). i'm mostly interested in changing the bitrate, but sometimes also the resolution.

3. how about a new forum: "virtualdub derivatives" like virtualdub sync, virtualdubVCR, nandub, etc?

cheers
avi

hi avih,

I must admit I can't solve your problem 'cause I'm using win98se and can't test it on XP. But one thing came into my mind...

QUOTE
if i select more than 1 item with the timer, then the 1st cap works ok, and the file is there, but when the snd cap starts, it deletes the 1st cap

what about taking v1.7 for your first capture and adjust everything as always. for your sec. capture just take v.1.9 - adjust as usual but give your capturefile another name (eg. v1.7=cap1 - v1.9=cap2)... then you have 2 timersettings for 2 different recordings.
... ok, just take it as a detour but it should work.

another problem should be solved as well. 2different VD-timer versions for different captures should give you enuff possibilities to change your cap settings.
just my ideas...

and about this 'mod' version...

Where is the official VirtualDub website?
The official VirtualDub site is www.virtualdub.org, NOT www.virtualdub.net. The last URL is a German-language VirtualDub 'mod' site, which judging by the abuse I got for asking for their sources, don't respect the GPL  mad.gif

it could be a special problem with XP and this 'mod' version... if someone could have a closer look into the sources maybe than it will be solved

Hehe, also thought about using different VDubs, but wont work, cause:

Error 418, no capture driver available or something like this in English

Means that you cant use the same capture device for two or more progs at the same time, and that si what you would do, I had a testrun and this error message...

Something else ???

sure... as you mentioned before when you were using it on your win98se, it was working perfect biggrin.gif

cheers Sill

P.S.: many ppl say that win9x is kind of a toy-OS but in terms of capture... cool.gif

hi avih,

to do a proper capture you should stick to win98se... as you said your timed caps were working perfect on it. I did a test run with vd-vcr. It was working as expected. I can't really tell you my settings... except some "extra" settings for myself, I leave everything by default. So, nothing special about vd -settings. But one thing is different and therefor maybe not really usefull for you. Because of my cap-card I had to install the wdm-vfw-wrapper. This won't give me the possibility to switch between channels. That means...

- i tested cap1 at time xy - 5min delay - then cap2 at time xy + 5min... than i had 2 different caps but of one channel
but
- because i can't use the built-in channel switch (the wrapper) i can't test cap1 at channel1 and cap2 at channel2 as timed captures

sorry sad.gif

I guess this hole thread didn't helped you as expected and again - sorry

regards Sill

nope, it did help. i know it's still really working on 98.

and, i don't need the channels. i use xp, wdm-wrapper, and can't use the bt tweaker (or whatever it's called) anyway, but since i cap from a sat-decoder, i can set it in advance to switch channels anytime i want.

the only problem is that i can't use multiple timer entries.

can someone pls confirm that on xp, when 2 items are selected on the timer pannel, after they both finish, only the 2nd exists on the hd?

thx again

Please tell me detailed the settings you use.
I have a routine inside that no file may erased.
It add a unique number after the name of 3 digits.
I was wondering if it is a change from W9x to WinXP

I had the same problem then you avih
Simply use Scheduled Tasks:
make a batch that renames capture000.avi for exemple in capture1ok.avi and put it in Scheduled Tasks etc..
Not the easiest solution, but it works biggrin.gif

I've been having this trouble with Windows XP also, and I think I have a solution. I haven't fully tested it yet, but I thought I'd post my ideas here and maybe somebody else can help out if I'm not perfectly clear.

Since VirtualdubVCR (1.49.2 now) captures all the files, it just deletes all files except the last captured one, so we should be able to set file permissions and disallow the deleting of files.

Since avih and I are both using XP-Pro I'm just making the assumption that you know how to manipulate your security settings. Should go something like this..

Create a user that has access to write to the directory or drive where your captured files are going, but not to delete. Create a shortcut, to VirtualdubVCR and set it to Run As the newly created user when using that shortcut.

biggrin.gif

Like I said, I haven't full implemented this or tested it, so please post and let me know if I've left anything out, if this works for you etc...

VDStart Pro (VirtualDub start timer pro).

Try it. Works for me. You can use it to capture with the normal VirtualDub (not mod version) plus it has the option to rename the files after each capture. You can also run any program you want on the timeline so if you can code, you can practically do anything you like before/during/after capturing starts.
