Hi, I'm trying to capture video with VirtualDub1.4.10 and DivX5.02 Compressor (on a Windows98-system with a Terratec TVValue-Card (BT878)). But in capture-mode (menu "video" "Compression") I cannot choose DivX502 - it's not in the list of available videocodecs. DivX502pro ist installed! And VD works with DivX502 in Dub-mode without any problem. So what's wrong?
Thank you for any help |

Is your capture set to some sort of RGB varriant? Divx and all MPEG codecs work in the YUV colorspace and can only be used in those capture modes. Also for best results don't capture to Divx. HuffYUV or MJPEG are much better. Recompress them afterwards for a much better product. |

Check horizontal and vertical resolutions after cropping and / or resizing. Width must be a a multiple of 4. height must be a multiple of 2 and when capturing RGB depth should be 24 or 32. (32 is normally an upsample of 24 since most cards won't go truly higher than 24). use RGB 24 (true colour) if you don't use YUV or YUV2. |

another user already here had the problem that some codecs didn't show up. This problem was causes by a bug in XP I think. Try using the Search function of this forum to find this thread ( in this thread is link to a solution of this problem ).
And altough MPEG codecs work in YUV they still show up if you use RGB because nearly every AVI codec ( even DivX ) is able to convert RGB data to YUV. |

I have XP. No problems here. Also when I set cap to RGB Divx and Xvid no longer appear. HuffYUV and MJPEG yes. But no MPEG based codecs. |

The bug doesn't occur on all systems ( I have XP, too ). But that you can't use DivX/XviD when capturing to RGB is strange. |

It is quite normal as I understand it. When I am set to capture in YUV no RGB only codecs show up. When I am set to capture in RGB no YUV only codecs show up. I don't know how many others have had similar problems. But changing the capture color space has always helped. HuffYUV and MJPEG are about the only ones that show under both modes.
It makes sense though. Converting color space on the fly and compressing especially with a CPU intensive codec like Divx would be foolish. This way you can not use it unless you are in the propper color space.
I think you are the exception rather than the rule ProfDrMorph. I have not heard of people being able to capture with Divx in RGB. |
