I've just compressed an avi-file to a smaller file with divx 5.0.2 codec but the sound still isn't completely on sync.

How can I fix this?
Should I use "synchronous blit" or "drop frames when behind" or any other option?

Please explain a bit more in detail what kind the async is :

- is it contant across the whole movie

or

- changing ?

What was the source ( both video and audio ) ?

If its constant you can set a positive or negative delay in Vdubs interleaving options

It its not constant i need more details how it performs ....

After capturing video for an hour, I decided to view it and noticed as time got longer, the video started to slowly go out of sync. After changing as many relevant settings as possible in Virtualdub, I am convinced this is a problem due to the way capture drivers are designed, alongside with audio drivers.

After trying another long avi (it was on a NTFS partition), it also played out of sync... it seems the 20-30 minute mark was the point where it became noticable. Researching on google confirmed that this had to do with the audio clock not being able to sync to the video clock correctly, so as time moves on, the difference drifts to the point where it's noticable.

One webpage that seemed to help a bit at understanding what was going on was

However, this is assuming that the AVI you have is here where a modified version of virtualdub apparently will fix it (I never confirmed it). I've also been told AVI_IO can also fix this sync problem as well so those are some options...

However, this is all assuming that your AVI was captured using virtualdub or most typical capture programs.

Normally not possible.

If PC is too slow to capture in real time you will have 'dropped frames', but the movie stays in sync.

Are you sure your PC is strong enough for real time playback ? Whats your PC specs ?

if I rember correct the Divx5.02 have some sync problem. with the audio in some case.

Try use Xvid (divx,mp4) or Sigma Designs software RMP4 encoder (divx,mp4) insted.

Both gives even better video qualtie ageinst divx5.02 does.

Video and audio stay not automatically sync when you get drops. But you can fix it:
1) before capturing: in Capture mode: set video timing activate "adjust video..." or
2) afterwards setting a new framerate: set Video framerate activate "change frame rate so that video and audio durations match"

This will fix your sync problem, when the frames are dropped over the whole movie, not only at one point of the capture.
