Welcome CyberData2,
if you want us to help you, we want you to give us a bit more details about your source video (in VirtualDub File information) and the compresion that you tried with the video.

Without these informations I can only guess:
You forgot to use any compression, just saved an uncompressed avi. Your file will get huge and the quality may get poor

No matter what compression i use the file is either huge (several hundred megs to over a gig) or poor quality. When I finaly found a compression that wouldn't make the file that big the quality suffered (I beleive it was intel l.263 video driver 2.55.016). It confuses me becuase a year or so ago I was able to edit files w/out a problem.

virtualdub file info gave a whole bunch of info that doesn't mean much to me. Are there specific things you need to know? Not that this is the only file that i have problems w/. Am I missing the correct compressions?

Thanks

... i guess you forgot to set 'video' to 'direct stream copy' when saving the new AVI ...

I had it on full processing mode. Would Direct Stream Copy make the difference?

Thanks

Direct Stream Copy means that VirtualDub doesn't recompress the video stream. But this doesn't work always ( depends on the codec/compression you used and it's settings ). Just try it.

Otherwise try using DivX5.02 Standard ( www.divx.com ) if you need a good codec for recompression ( = Full Processing Mode ).

I set it for direct stream copy but most of the files i try it w/ won't work at all and others end up being 500 megs.

Can you please tell us, what codec was used for compressing the source files ? (File -> File information)
Try this directstreamcopy procedure with other files (i.e. Divx). Does it work ?
