Hiya...haven't downloaded this thing yet, but need to know how seamless it is going to be to break my .avi's into 2 parts.

Basically, I have some movies that are too large for one CD. I don't want to compress them into .zip files, so my next coarse of action is to split them.

How do I go about doing this with VDub ?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

if you have the codecs installed, and the audio is NOT VBR, the procedure is very simple:

1. open the file in vdub.
2. audio -> direct stream copy
3. video -> direct stream copy
4. press 'home'
5. hold the control key pressed, and drag the slider at the bottom with the mouse till u reas the desired cut point. u can fine-adjust the position using the prev-key and next-key icons (yellow keys)
6. press the 'end' key, you should now see the 1st section marked.
7. file -> save as avi. select your name. it should take 1-3 mins
8. click the 'home' key
9. hold the control key, and drag the slider to the end or the clip (or press the relevant icon)
10. press the 'end' key
11. file -> save as avi, and select the name for the 2nd part.

if the audio is vbr (prob mp3) you'll have to use a vdub variant that's called nandub. search the web to find it.

cheers
avi

Thanks a lot. I'll try that. smile.gif

One more question...I am so new at this, I feel dumb, but you've gotta start somewhere... sad.gif

How can I determine what format the sound is in ? You mentioned VBR...how do I check that ?

Thanks.

If you are able to open your movie in vdub without an error message, that says you that Vdub wants to change the sound, you have cbr (constant bitrate) sound, everything is ok then, if you got this message, you may have vbr (variable bitrate) Then close vdub and use nandub instead

vbr is mostly in GKnot created movies for instead (sorry guys, not only and not in every GKnot movie, but often biggrin.gif )

hi DevineInMind,

welcome to this board.

Some sanguine engineers, realizing the value of balancing speed with pristine sound, have incorporated an oft-overlooked but eminently useable MP3 encoding technology called variable bitrate. VBR is used for many other encoding systems and codecs, especially video. Part of the MPEG standard, VBR was first implemented for MP3-encoded files by Xing Technologies (the developer of AudioCatalyst - now owned by Real Networks).
Standard MP3 files are encoded at a single bitrate through the entire file. In contrast, VBR encoding looks at the audio file and chooses what bitrate to encode based on how much audio information is present at any given moment. Simply put, VBR technology allows better sounding MP3 files in the same space taken up by your garden-variety constant bitrate (CBR) encoded song.
But apart from that maybe you've had heard something about OggVorbis, an open free audio format ("Vorbis" is the name of the actual audio compression format). The OggVorbis files are VBR "by nature" and result in higher performance than MPEG-1/2 audio layer 3.

To check if your soundfile is a VBR audio just open your file in Winamp (for OggVorbis files you'll need the 'in_vorbis' plugin) and have a look right to the visualization. If ...KB/S goes up and down then you'll surely have a VBR file, if there is a constant number (e.g. 128 KB/S) then it is CBR.

A movie containing CBR-audio can be opened in VD but if it won't work try Nandub. If Nandub opens your file then you have a movie file containing a VBR audio-file.

Ok, guys...knew this couldn't be as easy as it sounded. Of COURSE the audio ended up being vbr. So, I scour the web to find Nandub, but all I can find is the .rar file. Is Nandub a program, or is it just source code to allow Vdub to work with vbr format ?

Granted, I'm an idiot at this, but I certainly know how to search for, and download a program.. wacko.gif

I will continue the quest for Nandub, the elusive program, but in the mean time, can you tell me how the heck to use it ? Same simple properties as Vdub ?

Thanks !

Nandub is a modified version of VirtualDub ( same interface etc. ). You can find a compiled ( binary, non-source code ) version of it at www.doom9.org .

Yes, I already downloaded that...been nursing doom9.org since yesterday. Still don't see how it works. There is no program, just the .rar file...

Still confused on how to proceed... blink.gif

This might sound stupid, but have you unzipped the file with WinRAR?

Chrome:

It is not being downloaded as a .zip file. I didn't realize .zip was associated with .rar...(?) unsure.gif

Ok, now I feel dumb...you said Win'RAR', not Win'ZIP'. Duh. rolleyes.gif

Alright, I'll try that...once again, I must remind you of how GREEN I truly am on this topic.

I'll update on how it goes.

Thanks !

Alright, Nandub is working...I have followed the directions, as stated by Avih, but he mentions an 'end' key, and a 'home' key. I hold the pointer over each key, hoping a description will appear, but alas, to no avail...

Which keys are which ? I can tell what they do when I press them, but I am afraid that moving frames and playing/stopping the film is bringing me no closer to splicing this movie than when I first began this mission.

Anyone have any helpful hints ? Need to know what these buttons look like.

I made a backup of my movie, just in case... biggrin.gif

Thanks, all !

Hmmm...am I beyond help ? sad.gif

After re-opening the program, the highlights began popping up, with descriptions of what each button is for...but I still see no 'home', or 'end' button.

If I have not overstayed my welcome, please guide me to the light. cool.gif

Also, I received a message that states, "You are about to save an uncompressed AVI file which may be VERY large (which it was...ran out of hard drive space REAL quick). If it is not a temporary AVI file, consider using video compression to save space. The video mode must be set to Full Processing Mode for video compression to work."

How do I compress this into video ? biggrin.gif I am beginning to become a pain in the keister, aren't I ? sleep.gif

Thanks, guys...
