(Since this apparently comes up quite frequently, Iīm writing it up as a topic)

Problem: The size of the file increased like mad when saving a file after editing it with Virtualdub.

Solution: You probably didnīt use a codec. Apparently a quite common mistake by beginners. Virtualdub has to decode the video data before manipulating it, but it doesnīt compress it again, since it canīt know which codec you want to use.
(Also, if you want to edit the file further, you shouldnīt use a lossy compression.)

You can select a codec via menu: VIDEO->COMPRESSION-> (select codec from list and configure it).

Codec: COmpressor DECompressor, a "program" used to compress the data, making use of different methods. Whatever codec you choose, it has to be available at the computer where the file shall be played too.

Iīd recommend DivX(www.divx.com), but of course, you can chose any other codec too.

What codec to use?

As I wrote above, Iīd recommend DivX. In any case, do NOT use those preinstalled on most windows versions, like "Cinepak", "Video 1", "InDeo", etc...
These codecs are too old to be considered useful. Usually a file compressed with Cinepak would today be half the size with twice as much quality.

Instead, itīd be better to use an MPeg4 variant, as DivX, XviD, 3ivX, MS Mpeg4 or others.
These are relatively new and are usually much better.

Hereīs a link to the DivX Codec

[edit] Added something about codecs.

I've selected all of the latest codecs when saving segmented avi's, but they still end up being bigger than the original file. Is this unavoidable? My real goal here is to reduce the size of stored video. I really just want to take a few minutes or maybe even half of the video out of a particular file, and dispose of the rest. But it's not really worthwhile if in the end I have to store a larger set of files. Thanks a lot for your time.

I think another aspect of this problem is what to select in Audio & Video processing modes..."Direct Stream Copy" or "Full Processing Mode"...

Logically, us noobies would naturally select "Direct Stream Copy" since we've already selected a codec and compressed the capture...

There's nothing in the tuts or even anything intuitive that would lead noobies [me included] to conclude that VirtualDub will leave the product uncompressed after additional processing...

...Just my $.02...Maybe Avery should look at this aspect of the problem... rolleyes.gif

I'm still very confused on what to do. This is all I want to do: Take a few of my music vids and crop out the black bars. Alright, I know how to crop. I know that I have to select a codec (I prefer DivX). Is there a simple way of saving this cropped version with the full quality intact and keeping the file size the same or slightly smaller? BTW my music vids range from 30 - 50 megs. Any help would be appreciated.

AFAIK you cant crop without re-encoding the file, so you will have to use a compression
crop the sizes (both height and width) to multiples of 16 for DivX

tips for DivX-configuration: (you can configure them by pressing the 'configure'-button in the screen where you select the codec)

1. look up the original bitrate of the file (file--->file information) and adopt that or go a bit higher (like 10%) so you wont lose too much quality (you file size will decrease thx to the cropping, so you can give it a little bit more bitrate to be safe)
2. use multipassing (at least 2 passes)

if youre not sure how to do this then try a search on this forum or go to the DivX-site to get a guide or a helpfile...

Well, I have similar problem when saving a file after applying filter on it. The file size jump from 9 mb to 450 mb. I am using VitualDub version 154.It is on full processing mode(you can apply filter only on this mode). Compressed on Divx 5.11. No audio. The original file was in mpeg and converted to avi.
Anyone knows what makes the size jump?

What settings did you use for Divx? Any codec is only as good as itīs settings are.

Thanks for the reply. Actually the file size jumped from 9mb to 640mb if color depth is set at 24 bit if set at 16 bits then it is 450mb.

The settings:

Frame rate
Frame rate control - no change(current 30,000 fps)
Frame rate decimation - process all frame
Inverse telcine - none

Color depth - Decompression format - 24 bits
Output format - 24 bits

On the Divx 5.11 configuration:
Video compression - Divx 5.11 codec
Variable bitrate - 768 kbps
Bitrate modulation - 0.2

Settings - Manual CLI (bumm768-psy0-key100 ....)
Nothing in the Codec setting square
Video /advanced/ scene change threshold 50% Max keyframe interval 100
Source interlace selected as progressive

I've uninstall and re-install the VertualDub and the result is the same. At this rate ,from 9 mb to 650mb after filtering, I felt the compression is not working. I wonder if that has something to do with the registering of the program. Does VertualDub need to be registered for proper functioning?

are you using fastest compression method in DivX-settings?

that way no motion detection gets done, which basically means a lot of bigsized keyframes. try to use standard or slow mode.

Think I've resolved the problem by using different codec.I used Indeo 5.0.1 and the compressed size is 16mb.That's more like it. DivX 5.1.1 still not working and end up at 650mb.Don't know why.

i wouildnt recommend using indeo 5.0.1...

maybe you should get the DivX guide from www.divx.com and read that to begin with wink.gif

As StephanV said, do NOT use InDeo. Thatīs like using a horse-powered car on the highway.

Could you perhaps save the processing settings and upload them somewhere? That way we could take a look at your compression settings - itīs got to be there somewhere.

actually it would already help if steve did this:

go to the configure screen of the divx encoder and then press the 'settings' button (lower left corner). on top of that screen you will see 'manual CLI'. if you copy paste that here, we could evaluate your divx settings as i think something there goes wrong. what steve posted below here above for CLI doesn't make any sense... unsure.gif
