I am trying to edit a long AVI movie that I downloaded to make it fit. When I cut out the credits, the AVI went from an original size of 702 MB to 703 or 704 MB!!!
What gives????
Why the HELL would a shortened version be longer than the original???
Baffled.

I have no clue there. But you don't need to cut the credits; 702 MB should fit perfectly on an 80 minute CD-R. (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong about that.)

Was the video and audio both set for direct stream copy? |

Ok, in answer to the question -- yes, the video and audio were both set for direct stream copy, so I'm totally lost on this issue.
As for your suggestion (FCCHandler) regarding fitting 702 MB on a 700MB disk, I know that it should be possible, but I have YET to be able to accomplish this feat with my CD burning software - Roxy Easy CD Creator 5. (I only use this software b/c it came with my laptop - not for any other reason.) Any thoughts on how I can make 702 MB fit with Easy CD?
Many thanks for your patience and your assistance.

I use CDRWIN to burn, but I don't use 80 minute CD-R's and I've never burned one (that's why I was unsure in my previous post). However, simple math tells me what its capacity should be. If a 74 minute CD holds 650 MB of data, then an 80 minute CD should hold:
(80 / 74) * 650 MB = 702.7 MB
Based on that, I have no doubt that the maker of the AVI intended it to fit perfectly. I'm sorry; I don't know why Easy CD is failing you.

Your AVI file expanded because VirtualDub reinterleaved the audio blocks to a tighter ratio -- set interleaving to "every 500ms" and you should see the size drop a few megs. It's not unusual for files that have >100,000 highly compressed frames to have as much as 5MB eaten up by AVI structure overhead. Don't increase the interleaving interval too much -- if it's too high you'll force the player to seek back and forth on the CD during playback, and in that case you might as well not interleave at all.
As for the CD quandry, recent versions of Easy CD Creator are able to detect the actual capacity of a CD-R, and CD-R's usually vary by a few tenths of a megabyte in capacity. If you think this is bad, keep in mind that pressed CDs usually have tens of megabytes unused because the last dozen megabytes or so are often unreliable. |
