EDIT: I meant to type "No CODECS Listed" in the title!! I tried to edit that but I can only edit the body of this post. I can't find any option for deleting the post so hopefully I didn't ruin my own post with an incorrect title! Can a moderator please change that for me?

This is my first post here as I've jsut started using VirtualDub! This software seems so robust and fully featured that it's hard to believe that it has a GPL!

Anyway I have this, seemingly, common problem of capture file size. I have spent a couple hours reading the FAQ's, relevant forum posts, and trying to solve things on my own but I'm running into a problem I haven't been able to figure out without help.

Here are my specs and situation; I am running Win 8.1 on an AMD FX8320 CPU @4GHz, 16GB RAM, 120GB SSD with a secondary 1TB RED HDD, Radeon HD7970. I'm trying to make video files from my VHS home videos from when I was a kid by way of an EZCap video capture device and a VCR. My VCR is new as VCR's go. I can see the video playing from my VCR in VDub preview pane and, as far as I know, I can successfully capture and write video from my VCR to file. According to a test, my VHS video files will clock in at about 1GB for about 45 seconds of video. I guess that is normal for uncompressed video but it's obviously way too big considering the fact that I have about 6 or 7 VHS tapes to capture/convert and distribute.

When I realized the file size problem and went looking for the solution I found out that I need to be running the X86 version of VirtualDub so I downloaded that even though I was already using that version. After that I restarted my PC and made sure to select "normal recompress" in the Video menu, and the DivX codec still does not show up. I then reinstalled the latest DivX (10. something, current as of 3/5/2015), and rebooted my PC and, still, no DivX codec is listed in the Video/Compression menu. When i go into the DivX control panel>Codec Pack Settings, everything is greyed out, and it says that the H.264 is not installed (which doesn't make sense to me as I'm pretty sure I use H.264 on a daily basis). So after I saw that, I re-reinstalled DivX 10, same problem.

I'm pretty much at a loss, now. I tried to find other instances of this problem on my own but I haven't seen anyone else mention this exact thing or anything very close to it. I assume the file size problem would be solved if I could get the compression to work but that's what I can't figure out.

Can anyone help me figure this out!?

VirtualDub only see VFW/ACM codecs, I'm not sure if the latest DivX have them.
You can try VirtualDub AIO (it is in my signature) that contains many codecs including Xvid and x264 (the VFW version of them).

Cool! Thanks, ale! I haven't tried it yet but it's installing now. Not sure if I'll get a chance to try it tonight but I'll report back as soon as I do. Did you comikle this yourself? I see it's hosted from ale5000.altavista?

1) What?

2) It is altervista, not altavista.

I got this error after install of the AIO, but VDub still started. "File: ffdlls\avcodec-56.dll". I haven't tried to use it yet.

It is from the ffmpeg input plugin.
If you don't use it you can simply remove in_FFInputDriver.vdplugin from C:\Program Files\VirtualDub\plugins32\ or you can get the two missing files from here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1702491...%20beta%20B.zip

ale5000, you really just need to include those files. I understand that they're large, but if you're going to link to your installer as a solution then it needs to work. There's really no reason not to include them.

@ALbino: I know but with them the installer go from 10,1MB to 26,7MB.
Do you know if there are lite versions?

26mb is nothing in this day and age. Programs like Adobe Premiere are over 1gb. If your goal is to make an all-in-one installer, I wouldn't balk at 26mb, I'd call that amazingly impressive.

This raises another issue. I use FFMPEG for other stuff and have never had a problem. It was already installed before my original VDub installation and obviously before my VDub AIO installation. In my OP I said that the H.264 is reported as not installed in my DivX control panel but I just used H.264 a couple days ago, maybe later than that even. What's going on?

I agree. I can download that installer in, what, about 10 seconds? The difference, even if it made for a 150MB installer, would be inconsequential if it meant that everything works right out of the box.

The error is for the ffmpeg input plugin in VirtualDub (not the codec in Windows).

If you talk about normal players (not VirtualDub) the codec are different.
Official DivX installer is mostly crap.
Probably you have other codecs installed to decode H.264 and DivX videos (like ffdshow-tryouts or LAV).

So, I have video compression working and test capture outputs reasonable file sizes but now I have another problem. There are quite a few dropped frames and there is a lot of 'jitter' or, in other words, the video freezes for a short period during capture, as well as during playback so the jitter is encoded into the output file. This won't work. I don't think I have a hardware problem since I was able to capture uncompressed video before with no problem. I have a feeling that I have some settings off but there are so many that I don't know which ones to fix.

Also, in addition to the jitter, I get periods of maybe 15 or so black frames, more and more out of sync audio, and the audio track evetually, after about 10 minutes or so, will record to file in 3X speed so that it sounds like an Alvin and the Chipmunks album. There must be something important I need to learn. Who can help!?

Are you capturing uncompressed? It is possible you have used too much free space on the hard drive or created disk fragmentation; either way your disk will write more slowly than it did before.

When capturing with VirtualDub, you can choose any supported compression codec, but x264 is for the final product; it's too slow for real time capture.

For capture, I suggest one of the following 'lossless' codecs. They are all very fast and make your capture file 3-6 times smaller. Listed from newest to oldest, they are:
MagicYUV - possibly still experimental.
UT Video
Lagarith
Huffyuv - reliable & fast but single threaded. 32 bit only.
