Hi all! I have some casts I copied from an NTFS drive and backed up onto a fat32 system, but didnt realize the filesizes got chopped down to 4 gigs until my ntfs drive died. So Now id like to recover the files as best as possible.

I believe i was using MSU lossless codec (it always shows up in programs as SCLS)
http://www.compression.ru/video/ls-codec/s...e_codec_en.html
Though im not sure what the difference between the msu lossless codec is and the msu screen capture lossless codec
http://www.compression.ru/video/ls-codec/index_en.html

when I open a file in virtualdub it rebuilds indexes and then presents me with this

After I try and hit play I get this error

Any tips for recovering these files?

scls is the screen capture lossless codec

Screenshot 1
You need to open the video with extended options and tick the rederive keyframes checkbox to be able to move around the video properly in virtualdub

Screenshot 2
The msu codec is crashing
This is probably due to the video being broken, but msu stuff tends to be very crashy at the best of times

Workarounds
1) Try avoiding the end on the file, there may be some garbled data there that's crashing the codec
2) I'm not sure if the ffmpeg plugin can decode scls, but you might want to try opening it with that plugin - might work, might not

Second screenshot just means that virtualdub can't find the msu codec at all
Usually because it isn't installed or because you've mixed the bitness up - 32bit programs need 32bit codecs and 64bit programs need 64bit codecs

Out of bounds memory access goes like this ;-)
pick a number between 1000 and 2000
ok I'll pick 9
err what? boom! crash!

ok so its probably because theres no 64 bit version of the msu codec, so ill go back to using 32 bit vdub.

Any tips on getting around the out of bounds exception?

Unless the ffmpeg plugin can open it then no not really, it's simply that the video data is causing the codec to crash
The only cure is to not give the bad data to the codec in the first place, but then you've got no video........
You could try cutting out all the parts that cause it to crash, which could be eg just the last few seconds, or every other frame
Possibly you might be able to find an older version of the codec on the net which might not have the same problem?

MSU are repeat offenders for nice software that's buggy and unmaintained
I'd strongly advise against using their codecs for anything but temporary files that can be discarded
