I'm trying to use the subtitler plugin to put Chinese subs on a video using VirtualDub 1.10.4, but they come up as gibberish.
I made the subtitle file using Divxland Media Subtitler 2.1.1.
Both Virtual Dub and Media Subtitler are fresh installs. The only thing I've done since installing them is adding the subtitler plugin so I can do this project.
My OS is Windows 7 Ultimate. I have the English, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese language packs installed. My display language is English, and the Non-Unicode language setting is Chinese.
In Media Subtitler:
1. Tried to open a txt file (Unicode, GB2312) in Media Subtitler for editing. It came out as gibberish in the editing pane.
2. Copied the text line-by-line from the txt file into Media Subtitler. They showed up properly in the editing pane that time.
3. Did the timings, and the characters showed up fine in the video preview pane.
4. Saved the subtitles as an ssa file.
5. Previewed the project in Media Subtitler's 'preview' mode. The characters showed up fine in the video pane.
6. Attempted to embed the subtitles using Virtual Dub via Media Subtitler. The subtitles showed up as gibberish in the final product.
Observations:
In Media Subtitler, under Font settings, even when choosing a Chinese font such as SimSun, the "script" dialogue box is greyed out and hard-set to "Western". I think the key to fixing the problem lies in un-greying that dialog. A couple years ago I was doing a lot of Chinese subtitle projects with Virtual Dub and Media Subtitler, and never had any problems. The "script" dialog in MS had "Chinese (GB2312)" as an option, and that is what I always used. Now, for some reason that I can't ascertain, it's not available.
I'm sure the solution is something simple that I'm missing because I just need to get this project finished, but I appreciate any help anyone can give me! |

Try Subtitle Edit - it's a newer program and more likely to handle Unicode correctly.
Also, try ffvdub (a multi-purpose VirtualDub plugin; part of ffdshow tryouts) as the subtitle filter.
Here's a quick guide I posted elsewhere.
You may prefer AegiSub to Subtitle Edit. They are both good. |

I actually found the solution inside Media Subtitler. It gives the option of changing your system location in Windows, which returns the default charset for that location and sets it as the charset in use by Media Subtitler. After doing that, I re-saved the SSA file (probably not necessary, but did it just for good measure,) and then did the embed process again successfully. The only problem with this solution is that my system location is set as China now, so my date/time, calendar, etc, comes up in Chinese. As I remarked to a friend earlier today: "It's probably not the best solution, but it worked."
I'll definitely install the other plugin though, and will give those other subtitle editors a try for my next project! |
