OS: Windows XP Pro w/ SP3

Does it happen with all video files? Yes [I've tried several dozen different .avi files!]

What version of VirtualDub? v1.10.4

--------------------------

My understanding was VirtualDub primarily supports the .AVI format (though support for other formats can be added).

So, I was unpleasantly surprised when I got the error message:
QUOTE
Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'FMP4' (unknown)

VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable.

Keep in mind:

I had the XP Codec Pack installed ( http://www.free-codecs.com/download/XP_Codec_Pack.htm ), which included AVI Splitter 1.0.0.9. I since uninstalled that and installed the newer version ( X Codec Pack 2.6 ), which includes AVI Splitter 1.7.

If there is some way of pointing VirtualDub to the proper codec, I'd love to hear about it. I've searched through the menu options, but I can't find it. I also read the VirtualDub FAQ, but aside from telling me what I already knew, I did not find instructions on exactly how to resolve this problem.

Seriously, this essential detail should either be included in a readme.txt distributed in the files or easily found in the help file.

I'm certainly no newbie to PCs or software issues. But this missing detail is the opposite of being "user-friendly". sad.gif

The essential detail is the codecs fourcc code
FMP4

Googling that shows that it's FFDShows own codec
So you need FFDShow to be installed (VFW option needs to be ticked on install), and in FFDShow's VFW config dialog make sure FMP4 is enabled (that is on the 'other mp4' line)

Virtualdub doesn't need pointing at a codec etc, as it uses the codecs that are installed on the pc
If it's installed then Virtualdub will just use it as it needs to

Here's a hint for finding answers to these kind of problems - google the error message
Unless you happen to be the first person to have a problem then the answers already out there
