I've used VirtualDub once or twice to remove some unwanted pieces from video files and then direct stream copying so I didn't have to reencode or anything.
Can virtualdub be made to edit .flv files? It doesn't recognise them natively it would seem, if not.. is there another program where I could just remove entire segments from a .flv file? |

Googling for "cut flv" gives me a number of results.
Tried a few ones like:
> FLV Cuttor from http://www.spgsoft.com
> RichFLV from http://www.richapps.de
but they do not immediatly did what I would like...
VirtualDub is originally made for working with AVI files.
Via 'inputdrivers' and 'external encoders' it is now possible to open other kinds of videofiles (FLV, MKV, MOV, MP4, ...) and to save in these formats too.
But I must admin, for a beginner it is not easy to understand, and it is not possible to explain it in a few words neither.
In either way, if you would just be curious to open FLV files in VirtualDub:
The most simple way to be able to open FLV files in VirtualDub is to install the FFMpeg inputdriver plugin (for VirtualDub):
You can find version 0.8.0.3 here (thanks to dloneranger):

Installation means : unzip the content (select the right range of files depending on 32-bit or 64-bit) to your VirtualDub installation folder
(for exemple to C:\Program files\VirtualDub).
Be sure to keep the foldernames indicated in the ZIP-file, so that finally the content will be copied to the pluginsxx subfolder of your VirtualDub installation.
After installation, give it try with VirtualDub via File > Open video file...
(eventually first select the FLV file in the "Open video file"-dialogbox, then at "Files of type" : do select "FFMpeg Supported Files" and then click on the "Open" button.)

Only open. Then direct-stream-copy to .avi.
Needs that FLV.vdplugin, x264vfw or Google VP8 vfw & aac acm codecs.
Or FFDshow installed in system may works, too, also for VP9 etc.
For MKV, MP4 works the same way.

With this you can't direct-copy. |

Thanks meowmeow for the additional info, but I never said something about "Direct Stream Copy".
I only said you can open and you can save ...
I did not say "How to ?", because that is - at my opinion - a little bit "too complicated" for someone who has almost no experience with VirtualDub.
Myself, I do not like to start (again) an endless story of explaining how exactly to open other filetypes and how to save them to other filetypes, because there are so many possible obstacles...
If someone else is interested to do that (explanation)... please feel free...
