Separately I'm trying to determine how to get VD to open an mp4 file from a GoPro, but I have some basic questions from a newbie who has used VD for years at a very basic level.

If I am using 32 bit, I should install in the Program Files (x86) directory?

When installed, VD has a plugins folder. Assuming I have installed in the (x86) folder, do I need a separate plugins32 folder?

Is there an order that needs to be followed when installing ffdshow or other programs that install codecs? In other words, how does Virtualdub know where to search for other codecs if they are not located in the VirtualDub plugins folder?

Many thanks

Actually, it doesn't matter, but you can use that location if you want

The plugins32 folder has to be in the virtualdub folder

Codecs are installed into the OS, virtualdub asks the OS for a VFW codec that can decode a given fourcc code
Input plugins can use other methods - FFMpeg plugin has it's own codocs built in, DirectShow plugin uses the OS DirectShow codecs

Let's say its H.264 video in MP4 container. Three ways to open:

1. With plugins32\FFInputDriver.vdplugin (and ffdlls folder there ~16MB)

After installing H.264 codec (coder-decoder) into OS (Video for Windows or DirectShow)

2. With plugins32\QuickTime.vdplugin (VfW)
3. With plugins32\DShowInputDriver.vdplugin (DShow)

Correct me if meowmeow wrong.

Edit: DShow may no need installing H.264 codec, but in the case has to be updated with LAV filters or Haali or something.
