I casually installed a new MS codec a week or so ago. Today I find that it is appearing in VirtualDub's (1.5.1) select video compression dialog as: "Microsoft Windows Media Video 9." Does anyone know anything about it? It seems to have lots of options, rather like DivXPro. Is this Microsoft's answer to DivXPro? Anyone had any experience with it?

I tried one avi encoding and it looked pretty good, but I'm no expert.

Unfortunately I've lost the link where I found it.

Thanks! smile.gif

It's an unsupported codec, surprising that MS released it considering their trying to force people to use WMV these days.

Windows Media Video is more or less yet another, an MPEG-4 variant with pretty good quality at low bitrates. I wouldn't recommend it for high bitrates though, because it tends to smooth out the image a lot.

Even so, it's a nice alternative. I wonder if it plays back fine with the standard WMV9 DirectShow filter?

It's called Microsoft Windows Media Video 9 VCM (stands for "video compression manager"?) and it's discussed here in this thread from the Announcements/News section.

Microsoft apparently did this on purpose as a result of strong demand for a way to encode directly into WMV9 using VirtualDub, Premiere, Ulead, and any other program that connects to VFW codecs. The interesting thing is that you can now joing a WMV9 video with a mp3 audio track...
