I´m having troubles with the Divx 5.0.X too(mainly because I till yet only used a VERY old DivX codec).

Anyway, my guess would be that the codec might "overlook" a scene change. Could it be that?

DivX 5.04 "Schizo" Beta has been made available, and fixes many bugs in 5.03. It's not guaranteed to fix everything... I repeat, beta... but worth a try.

DivX 5.04 Beta

It also has an interesting tool ("Electrokompressiongraph") for directly/manually controlling bitrate modulation if you choose, during Nth-pass encoding.
