well. let say it this way. i have BIG MKV file, with DTS audio in it, and i want to rerender it so it gets smaller. making it smaller was no problem, but i dont have any audio tracks in it. original audio track say's DTS 5.1 6 channels. am i missing a specific plugin for this ? |

You haven't said what plugin you used to open the mkv or what you did in your first attempt, so I can't pinpoint what problem you had
In general
fccHandlers mkv plugin can do direct stream copy, so audio could have just been copied if reprocessing was needed you'd have to have an acm codec for the dts decoder (I think ac3filter includes one IIRC) multi channel reencoding may be a problem without downmixing
ffmpeg plugin should just load the file fine, but video and audio will be uncompressed to virtualdub and require reencoding no direct stream copy with this plugin
directshow plugin should just load the file fine as long as you have directshow codecs installed on your pc, but video and audio will be uncompressed to virtualdub and require reencoding no direct stream copy with this plugin
-------
you can also use tools like mmg.exe from mkvtoolnix to take the vid from one file and the audio from another and mux the two together to a new mkv

my mistake, yes i use FCCHandlers MKV plugin. FOR rencoding i use the x274 codec stuff what was on sourceforge. (x264-r2431-ac76440.exe 8mb) |

So, am I guessing right that you did this
Load the .mkv file with the matroska plugin Set the audio to direct stream copy Set the video to one of fast, normal or full processing Set the video compressor to x264vfw Set the video compressors options Saved avi from the file menu
If that's what you did then the video should have audio in it
Things to check
After loading the .mkv check the file information dialog box, to see if the audio is shown and correct (same length as the video etc) After loading the avi you created, check the file information dialog box, to see what (if any) audio is shown
If virtualdub shows that there's audio in the .mkv and none in the avi your easiest bet may to just remux the video from your new file and the audio from your .mkv A good tool for that is MKVToolnix https://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolni...ds.html#windows eg Run mmg.exe Drag your new file to the input box of mmg Click on it to select it In the "tracks, chapters and tags" box below untick everything apart from the video track Drag the original .mkv to the input box of mmg Click on it to select it In the "tracks, chapters and tags" box below untick everything apart from the audio track Set your output filename at the bottom Click "start muxing"
And very quickly you'll have a new .mkv with the video from your new file and the audio from the original .mkv

Just converting the DTS track (or if you had the DVD) to Dolby Digital 5.1 would've reduced the file without having to re-encode the video. A DTS file is around 1500 kbps while a Dolby Digital 5.1 could've been anywhere from 192 kbps to 640 kbps. 384 or 448 are most common for 5.1 ac3. Although 192 is good for 2 channel ac3, it is not recommended for 5.1 Surround.
Not sure why you want to reduce the file size though. |
