I recently bought a refurbished computer, Windows 7 Home Edition (my old computer with XP died). I never had trouble editing videos with VirtualDub on my old computer Windows XP.
However, with newer computer Windows 7 Home Edition, it won't let me edit video files.
I am using VirtualDub 1.9.11
When I try to open the video file, the following message pops up:
VirtualDub error:
Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'H264' (unknown)

I tried opening another video file and got different message:
VirtualDub Error:
VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible
codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as
those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable.

Can you help me?

Vdub doesnt support that file format by default. You will need to download the plugin and put it in the plugin folder in vdub.

Here is the link to the plugins

I don't get it. With my old computer that had XP, all I did was download VirtualDub and I was able to edit the videos that I am "trying" to edit now (the exact same format).
Nothing has changed except that I am now using Windows 7, instead of XP.

At some point you probably installed ffdshow or something that allowed you to decode the video, and dozens of others.

You know that in a movie or video-file, there are images and there is sound. These are stored in the file as a video-track and an audio-track.
To not waste diskspace, the video and the audio are "compressed" via encoding, by codecs (coders, de-coders).

Now, when you like to open and to play a video-file, it must be un-compressed, also via an audio- and a video-codec (rather read a "de-coder" this time).
For audio there is mostly no problem, but for video that is another thing.

In older Windows operating systems (like Windows 95) the video-codecs were of the "video for windows" type.
In more recent systems they are of "DirectShow" or "Windows Foundation" type. The video for windows codecs or no longer included by default.

Unfortunately, also by default, VirtualDub can only use the video for windows codecs (vfw).

So, the most simple solution to resolve your problem is to download and install the vfw-codecs that you need (probably the H.264 and the Xvid codecs).
You can find them here:
> https://www.xvid.com/download/

Thanks to input "plug-ins" (like the DirectShow-plugin), VirtualDub is also able to use the other types of codecs.

The most suitable plug-in is the FFMPeg one, recently updated by dloneranger.
This plugin does not need additional codecs to be installed.
So, via this "VirtualDub FFMPeg Input Plugin", you can open almost any kind of video-file (MP4, MOV, MKV, FLV, ...)
(unzip the files - from the "plugins32" subfolder - to the "plugins32" subfolder of VirtualDub).
IMPORTANT REMARK: The plugin does NOT work with VirtualDub version 1.9.11. For this you need at least version 1.10.x.

But for starting, I would advice you to install the above "video for windows"-codecs and see what it gives.

Please come back if you need more information.
