I get "Couldn't locate defcompressor for format 'MP43' ..." when I open a file that WMP handles fine.

I'm on Windows Pr0 8.1

Installed and "configured" (hmmm...) ffdshow but no joy. But looking through the installed files there is no libavcodecs.

libavcodecs seems to be the only option during configuration. The other is Xvid for stable formats and that leaves the formats I think I'm interested in set to libavdoces or in the case of MP43 to "MP43" whatever that means - mp43decd.dll which it does not find but is there.

I suppose that the mp43decd.dll is a DirectShow / Windows Media Foundation compatible decoder, not "video for windows".

So, to make use of this decoder, you should best install the DirectShow inputdriver plugin for VirtualDub, that you can find here:

Install it by:
- extracting the right "DShowInputDriver.vdplugin"-file out of the ZIP-file (32-bit or 64-bit corresponding to your VirtualDub installation).
- copying this *.vdplugin-file into the plugins32 / plugins64 subfolder of your VirtualDub.exe installation.

To open AVI via the DirectShow plugin :
- in VirtualDub, click File > Open video file..., and
- in that dialogbox select the MP43 encoded AVI-file, then
- at Files of type: , do select DirectShow inputdriver
- finally click the "Open" button.

An alternative should be to install the FFMPeg inputdriver plugin for VirtualDub, that you can find here:

Installation and use is similar to DirectShow (take care to also extract and copy the "ffdlls" subfolder with its four *.dll files).

Sorry to waste everyones' time. Further, more refined googling, found that there were problems with W8 builds. Installing the latest from sourceforge builds solved the problem. I need to look further into how I got to a prior build, but all, again, is right with my world.

Thx folks.
