Hi! New here, and tried to find an existing thread, but couldn't. On MP4 files opened with VirtualDub I get this message when attempting to play the file while processing: "No audio decompressor could be found to decompress the source audio format (Source format tag 00ff)"
I installed ac3 and ac3acm codecs and still no fix. Am I missing a codec or a step? Looking through Google I mostly get installing the two above codecs as the 'fix', but it's not happening with my computer.
Thank you for any help! smile.gif

"00ff" should be the AAC ACM (and "2000" should be the AC3 ACM).

So, download and install the AAC ACM that you can find at:
http://gral.y0.pl/~fcchandler

(thanks to gral for hosting a copy of fccHandler's stuff)

Via Windows Media Player > Help > About Windows Media Player > Technical Support Information,
you can get a list of installed Audio and Video codecs on your pc.

Thanks for the reply! I'd attempted adding that plug in before, and it hadn't worked. I uninstalled the old, and replaced it with the one in the link, and still the same problem. sad.gif

This trouble with people installing .inf files comes up a lot

Try this installer I just put together
It's in my sig

Close virtualdub
Install aac codec
Open virtualdub and open file

Does it work then?

Thanks for the assist! I downloaded the AAC installer from your sig and it failed, but gave me this message:
"unable to execute file:
C:\Windows\system 32\InfDefaultInstall.exe
CreateProcess failed; code 740.
The requested operation requires elevation."
I attempted the AC3 installer just to see what would happen with it, and it gave me the same result. Does this mean I have a default which is blocking installs?

Sorry it took so long to check those out! Unfortunately they failed to install. The exact same message in both cases. sad.gif

That's odd, they work fine here and on my virtual machines
When they run, you do get the User Account Control 'do you want to allow this to make changes' dialog appear?
If you answer yes, then they are run elevated

If you don't, then try right clicking on them and selecting 'run as administrator'

[edit]
Tested on win7 and win8, 32bit and 64bit, both with and without UAC turned on
Everything worked as expected

I chose 'run as administrator' initially, and the error notice was given. What I'm going to attempt is redownloading and then searching for AAC or AC3 codecs already on the system. Perhaps there's an instance where they are not up to date and therefore not working with MP4, but blocking an 'upgrade'?

YES! OK, what I said I was doing in my last post did not work, BUT I realized midway through that, as you pointed out, it was the UAC that was blocking (why exactly I need to look into, as I am the only user on this computer), so I shut off the UAC in order to install, and VOILA! it worked! Ran VirtualDub on an MP4 and was able to play audio as well as video! Thank you SO much! biggrin.gif
