Hello,
I have mpg4 file and need uncompressed avi. I installed x264vfw.2146kMod.x86.exe because my VD (1.9.2.0) required VFW codec. I got even the message: "... unknown or unsupported file type". Then I convert it into avi (FormatFactory) and the VD's answer was: "XVID unknown". What should I do? Please help me! (I've been trying to find the right solution for some days but I did't'.) Windows xp!

Whether it's a MP4 file? If yes, use/install fccHandler's QuickTime input plugin.
Also you can use FFMpeg input driver or DirectShow import driver.

You have installed Xvid codec? But beware, FormatFactory performed lossy re-encoding (MPEG-4 AVC > MPEG-4 ASP).
Better idea is to use a converter which has an option to convert to an uncompressed A/V (or lossless format) - which FormatFactory not able.

Thank you Placio74! Yes, my file is mp4, video codec is avc1 and audio codec is mp4a.
Should I uninstall the vfw codec before using your suggested program?
No, I did not install the xvid codec. To tell the truth I hoped that the longnamed codec makes it not necessary.
Unfortunately, I know only the VDub that makes uncompressed avi (I used it many times but my new cameras make mp4 file instead of avi that were produced by recently used cameras), and I can even edit with it too before I finish my fine editing with Vegas. (Vegas accepts uncompressed avi only.)
You are right, FormatFactory converts the original mp4 in a little bit smaller avi, but I tried to tribble the VDub - unsuccessful. |

Use the "fccHandler's QuickTime input plugin" to open directly the MP4 in VirtualDub as Placio74 said.
x264vfw is for files with H.264/AVC1 video, since FormatFactory converted it to Xvid obviously it isn't used. Don't think that one VFW codec is enough to open all files
If you open the original file directly in VirtualDub with the "fccHandler's QuickTime input plugin" and the file contains H.264/AVC1 video then the x264vfw will be automatically used by VirtualDub.

Thank you, ale 5000!
Should I use the "Change Log" and "QuickTime-source.7z" links after installing QuickTime.zip? (Sorry for my possibly stupid question!)

No. The input plugins cannot be installed, just place the file with the "vdplugin" extension in the plugins32 folder of VirtualDub (plugins64 for 64-bit VirtualDub) and it will be automatically used by VirtualDub.

This is not necessarily. x264vfw is to encode/decode MPEG-4 AVC (also known as H.264), when Xvid is to encode/decode MPEG-4 ASP. These are different formats and different codecs.
BTW VfW means "Video for Windows" and it's one of multomedia frameworks (other multimedia frameworks: DirectShow, Media Foundation, QuickTime, ...).
fccHandler's QuickTime input plugin requires VfW (video) and ACM (audio) codecs (such as VirtualDub). To decode MPEG-AVC can be used x264vfw or ffdshow VFW. This plugin is to import A/V from MP4 container (and variants, such as MOV or 3GP).
FFMpeg input driver does not use 'external' codecs (I mean, installed in system), but FFmpeg libraries.
DirectShow import driver uses DirectShow filters (installed in system), that are used (for example) when playing A/V in Windows Media Player (or other DirectShow player).
Also... Tateu's QuickTime input plugin uses QuickTime framework (installed QuickTime Player is required).

Not only. I remember that old Vegas versions have ridiculous restrictions for some MPEG-4 ASP codecs (Xvid, DivX). There should be no problems with HuffYUV (and maybe other lossless codecs). And if I remember correctly... Vegas uses VfW codecs (maybe with some exceptions) to decode vids from AVI container, but to import A/V from MP4/MOV uses QuickTime.

I put the plugin into the VD/Plugins32 folder, restarted my computer and got the (usual) message from VD:
"Couldn't locate decompressor for format WMV2 (unknown)
"VD requires a VFW compatible codec..."
I signed the VD Hack, and libav in the x264vfw previously, the output mode are VFW, H264
What could be wrong? |

Strange and unusual... WMV in MP4 container (instead ASF)?
WMV2 it's FourCC code for Windows Media Video 8. Has nothing to do with x264vfw codec and MPEG-4 AVC format.
You can decode WMV (in VirtualDub) through ffdshow VFW. If you have installed ffdshow, go to ffdshow video encoder configuration > Decoder > Codecs and enable support for WMV2/8 (set decoder to libavcodec or wmv9).

I started to install "ffdshow" but found many options to mark at "Decode" option so I cancelled the installation. The possibilites are "libavcodec" or "lib..." The default marking is "lib...". Should I accept it or change the checkbox to "libavcodec" everywhere?

At beginning of installation (select components), make sure that VFW interface is selected. If you do not want to decode A/V through ffdshow DirectShow decoder, uncheck video and audio formats (additional tasks). Support for various A/V formats can later turn on/off in configuration. After installation, go to VFW configuration. Enable support of video formats - such as you need.

There is no need to uninstall x264vfw.

Thank you for your help! I'm cancelling the work on my problem with ffdshow trying a right script with avisynth and put it into VDMod. |
