First, I am a moron when it comes to computers. I try to use virtualdub 64 bit windows 7 and load an avi file. I get the error "couldn't locate decompresser for format XVID etc. need a VFW codec etc. I've looked on the web and found many sites with the "answer" for this. I find many codecs to download. I choose one and download it. then same thing happens. How do I get vdub to go through the codec i just downloaded? Can some good Samaritan please help a poor dope and give me a step by step instruction on how to find the right codec download it and use it to somehow be recognized by vdub or the avi file so i can edit the video? really, step by step. HELP !

Install ffdshow-tryout ( https://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow-tryout/ ), then go in ffdshow VFW interface (the one with the yellow icon, not the one with the red icon) => Decoder => Codecs => and enable Xvid.

Thanks. I will try it. But let me ask another question. I somehow stumbled through getting the 32 bit to work by doing something as you suggest above. The strange thing to me is that I start with an avi file that is 32.6 MB and after virtualdub editing (all I did was crop the video) I end up with an avi file that is 1.5 GB !! Is this normal for this program? Jeepers. IS there something I can do to get a similarly-sized file after editing?

For the 32-bit version of VirtualDub there is a 32-bit version of ffdshow-tryout, for 64-bit version of VirtualDub there is a 64-bit version of ffdshow-tryout.
Both 32 and 64 bit can coexist on the same system.

On the Video menu if you select "Direct Stream copy" the video will remain the same, you are limited of what you can do (but you can for example cut parts of the video).
If you want to do more you can select Video => "Fast recompress" but you must also select the compression format under Video => "Compression..." otherwise you will have an uncompressed video (very big).

To use filters, like for cropping you need Video => "Full processing mode" and also select Video => "Compression..." to avoid ending with an uncompressed video.
