I am using VirtualDub to process video before frameserving it to TMPGEnc for mpeg2 encoding for use on DVD. The video is imported as DV files. After having installed the "Mega Codec Pack", I can open these files in VDub. After processing it, I have chosen "uncompressed RGB AVI" as the format which is then frameserved to TMPGEnc. That means that the file goes from DV to AVI to Mpeg2.

My question is: Is there a cleaner way to send that file on its way? Is there a way to process the DV file and frameserve it without recompressing it, (as TMPG can also read DV files). Are all DV codecs equal? Some of my options include DVSoft, Pinnacle DV codec, SONY DV, and several YUV codecs. I selected uncompressed AVI beacause uncompressed sounds like the least lossy solution. However, DV-AVI-Mpeg2 doesn't sound trouble free, either.

Sincerely,

Ray3D

Why dont you use HuffYuv as lossless video codec for the editing, before feeding it to TMPEGencoder ? It will reduce your file size siginificantly, but still be lossless compared to uncompressed ( raw ) RGB ... look at it like a kind of 'Zip' for video ... it doesnt alter the data, but compresses it ...
