Would it be feasible to hack a VirtualDub server to parcel out chunks of a project to network clients, encode some chunks itself and re-assemble finished chunks back together? You could hack out a command-line, no GUI version for the clients. Network bandwidth however is a problem, after all, we're working with 12GB files.
