Mp3pro And Wma8

I was wondering if I could use MP3PRO or WMA8 to create a DivX movie. These codecs compress 2 times better than MP3 and , for movie oriented content such as speech and dialogs mostly, the quality is excellent. So, if I compress my audio stream with WMA8 64kbps , will NanDub allow me to mux it with the video? The same question goes for MP3PRO but, as it is less supported by windows (media player sees mp3pro files as standard mp3's) I suppose even if I mux it with the video, it won't work as mp3pro.
But, as wma8 is a microsoft product and the avi container is perfectly supported by media player, why couldn't I mux it with DivX5 and create a DivX/wma avi with boosted image quality (less % size of audio).

Hi augi,

i hate to say 2x no !

WMA8 : There was once a program ( illegal ) floating in the net called wma2wav that would add a wav header to the old wma. This program would not work with wma8, plus we are not allowed to discuss this here as Microsoft is closing wma for their proprietary containers like ASF.
( DivX people took old wma it to create DivX audio ACM codec with it )

MP3Pro : There is currently no way to mux MP3Pro into AVI, maybe robux4's mpa2wav will allow to do it soon, but then there is still no Directshow filter that would allow us to play the audio in full quality. If played with normal MP3 DSF all sound above 10 KHz is missing, so every normal MP3 will sound better for sure.

I can confirm, mpa2wav will work with mp3Pro...
But it will be played as a regular MP3 since there is no ACM or DShow Filter that support MP3Pro (AFAIK). That makes the format a bit limited...

For WMA, I think you can't embed it in AVI... But I'm not sure.

MP3Pro will work in AVI with robUx4's mpa2wav utility but it is only seen as MP3(and played as 22,050Hz). Someone needs to make an MP3Pro DS Filter or ACM codec.

I'm not sure but I think the wma2wav util did allow you to put wma audio into an AVI file, whether or not it would be playable in any M$ player I don't know.

Why not just use vorbis???????????
It compresses better than the rest of them and with a LOT better quality. My days of using mp3 are totally over!Vorbis is it for me,for movies at least.

Well, Vorbis would be my choice either, but there is unfortunately no proper way of putting it in AVI.

Only format that will allow using Vorbis is the Ogg format ( VfW implementation from Tobias Waldvogel ), and this is not supported in Virtualdub yet sad.gif ...

Well .... honestly speaking i dont know.

robux4 is currently sending his mpa2wav sources to Avery for implementation into Vdub, and this was dsigned to add a WAV header to MP3, MP2 etc. audio files ( like what was done before already ), but in a more intelligent way than all the other similar tools existing.

He is stating that this will even make it possible to use LameMP3 in VBR mode, which was only possible using Nando's nandub so far, and this way of implementing it would break the AVI specs as Avery had been pointing out in his newsletter month ago.

But if this will work for LameMP3 in VBR mode there is probably a chance it could work with Vorbis also, of curse only if someones sits down to create a 'VorbisACM' codec for use with Vdu .... we`ll see.

I thought there already was a Vorbis ACM codec. Maybe I was just mistaken.

Yep, I think there is one. But ACM makes non sense with VBR data (ABR is OK).

It's not a problem to have an ACM for ANY codec. It will work perfectly with WAV files.
The problem here is with AVI files and muxing+sync with video. VBR+ACM is impossible to achieve that. (even ABR is not perfect)
