I wonder why VirtualDub doesn't support DV-AVI, Type 1 (i.e. the type of AVI file that so many people are capturing from the DV camcorder).

It is possible to get VDub to work with DV-AVI, but you have to get the MainConcept (or Panasonic) Codec. Even then, it is using the older Video-for-Windows (DV AVI, Type 2) standard which is more prone to audio synch problems. It also requires the extra step of converting from your DV-AVI from Type 1 (that you captured) to the more error-prone Type 2 first.

Is there something fundamentally difficult about adding DV AVI, Type 1 support? Are there licensing issues/costs?

There aren´t any specs how the audio is stored in the type-1 avi, but there is a very good way to get virtualdub read the audio.
Remux the avi with GraphEdit:
CODE
                                                               ---->
dvtype1.avi -> Avi Splitter -> DV Splitter - |      | AVI Mux -> File Writer
                                                               ---->

The file won´t be bigger and without any loss. It can be perfectly read by VirtualDub or any other software.

Virtually all major products work with DV-AVI, Type-1 (video editors, TMPGEnc, WinDVD, Win Media Player, even audio editors). I thought that the decoder that comes with modern versions of Windows did the work for these products ... products just need to tie into the codec.

The best explanation that I have seen is here:
