(Just writing off some weekend frustration.)
Last Friday I decided to give Linux (Kubuntu) a go. The main reason for that is that my sister is donating her old computer to my parents. It has Win98 on it, but my sis made a real mess of it and since I'm not willing to fix that or re-install it (it was kind of an illegal version anyway) and my parents don't want to spend too much money on a new OS, Linux is one of the first things to look at. Now I have no problems with Kubuntu, it actually works perfectly for the things they want to do: internet + email and the occasional word processing. Since neither of them have any big experience with using Windows, I reckon the change from Win98 ---> WinXP would not be less shocking than going from Win98 ---> Kubuntu. After all, for them the change is merely on the graphics side.
The horror started when I freed up some space with Partition Magic and it asked me to reboot... I thought I could just skip the procedure and install Kubuntu right away. After installing Kubuntu and some playing around with it, I needed to go back to XP again but after the normal boot screen, I got an error that autochk.exe could not be found and it was skipping the procedure... the problem was this skipping resulted in a system failure and a reboot. Now, I figured what I should have done was letting XP reboot before installing Linux. Even safe mode didn't solve my problem and since my WinXp was already installed on my notebook by my uni and therefor I didn't have a WinXP install disk, i gave up for that day and just wait for Monday to fix it on uni by re-imaging the partition.
So for the weekend I tried out Kubuntu and like I said: it works good. My dad had no real problems using it and my mom... well, you know how moms are.
Then this morning I had the great idea to just search for "autochk.exe" in Google (beats me why I didn't think of that before) and of course the first hit was immediately the answer to my problem. Apparently something (or someone ) had set the partition type to 'hidden'. Luckily I still had an MS-DOS boot disk, a program called ptedit and my tab-key (no mouse) to fix it. Basically all I had to do is setting the partition type value from 0x17 to 0x07.
But of course, as the greatest Dutch football player ever always says: 'Elk nadeel heb z'n voordeel.' Anyways, use Google!!!

hey man, write longer stories; this one's too short for me to understand why do your folks need xp/linux dual-boot(?).
that is what you attempted, right?
or were these problems on your pc?
steady this time.
i dunno what os should i install to my brother's kids; 98 is unstable, 2k and xp need constant updating (they would probably spend all their web time (schools donates some free surfing) on dloading patches if auto-update was on...)etc. no games on linux.
yes, pcs are surely fun!

They don't need dual-boot, i was just dual-booting on my own note-book to see if Kubuntu was worth the effort of installing it for them. They are getting my sisters PC (my parents don't have a PC right now) with a screwy Win98 on it, but as the PC isn't actually here yet and I'm always impatient i just tried it on my notebook. As I said, I'm not willing to fix that and as they don't want to spend money on a new OS, Linux came to my mind.

These problems were indeed on my notebook.

Linux needs updating too... but I'm not to worried about with my 8000kbps connection.
I think the only major updating for any OS is when you first installed it or when new service packs arive. But with a 56k modem updating will always be a hassle yes.
Luckily my parents don't play computer games.

so you have 'presented' them linux on your notebook and said "here, it will look like this". ok, makes sense now.

yeah, that's problem. other problem is that xp service pack on cd checks for software genuinity.
i don't care much for xp(will never install that on my machines), but it seems kids like the eye-candy, and all other sorts of candies!
perhaps it's best to put 98se; it's so old that nobody is even attacking it anymore, and the games work best on it.
my parents don't play ANY games anymore.
