Since the pinned topics apparently donīt help - and many users arenīt willing to use the SEARCH function, and Iīve recently been told I shouldnīt insult people asking stupid questions(I tend to agree, but I easily lose my temper), I propose the displaying of a "mini-FAQ" during registering.

After the first page there could be an informational display, containing the most often asked questions - the missing codecs, and increase of filesize.

My suggestion would be something like:

QUOTE
If your only question is
*) "Why did the file size go up after saving" or
*) "What does that error("Virtualdub needs a VfW codec for codec "WXYZ")", or
*) "What does DVSD mean and why canīt VDub open my file?"

then please do a search BEFORE posting any message. It has been answered numerous times, and you donīt want to look like a complete idiot who canīt use do a simple search before posting, do you?

Maybe thatīll help. If not, I recommend instantly locking these topics and banning the user.

I know Iīm overreacting, but quite frankly Iīm p...d off at people who canīt be bothered to be polite enough to do a quick search.
In most cases a single keyword turns up dozens of threads with useful answers.

who would apply this?
fcc?
he'll break the forum again!

probably better idea is just to point them to faq at registration ,and then add these searches to faq
(this forum has wrong defualts upon search!)

ie, you do a search and select the best answer(s) to questions you found are repetitive, and put those to faq....

there is one more problem; the forum is splitted to many subforums and every sub-forum has it's own faq; this doesn't help either...
in what forum should a user post....?
or what sub-forum's faq to see first?

so a general faq should be at page1...so it's easy to see as soon as you get here...

you know where would i put such 'linky' faq?
on the top, where now you see "many thanks to everwicked" and simillar...
with nice , big, red letters so everyone sees it....

one more; why is this forum called "unofficial" if avery is posting here?

what does "offciial" mean for opensource projects anyway?

but cyberman, what about the book?
wink.gif
still goin' slow or?

And why the he11 is VirtualDub spelled with a little 'd' ?!?

QUOTE

THERE IS NO SPACE IN THE D*MN PROGRAM NAME.  There never has been, and there never will be.  The program is called "VirtualDub."  There is no space, the D is capitalized, and the program is not called "virtual dub."  Fix your pages, and stop misspelling the program name!!!

I think I fixed that part, and I didn't break anything this time! laugh.gif

Unfortunately, I don't see any way to change the default search options. But I'll see if I can figure out a way to direct new members to our FAQ, if possible.

Not just directing them - display it. Just a few selected entries, not the entire FAQ.

In short: there should be no excuse left for asking questions like the afforementioned.
Unless itīs indeed a very special problem, like a rare codec(DUCK for example ;-). But not the old "what is DX50".
