Czech team have the best chances if you ask me. and they deserve to win too, they play great (good coach as well) smile.gif

as for oranjes chances: i think they are not too bad against portugal, they didnt really impress either (and maybe Figo will cause a riot before wednesday, you never know wink.gif )

i agree...your team is playing better football than portugal....
that's for sure!

i think they shouldn't have any problems there!

yesterday's game saw almost equal number of chances on both sides(although i must say, netherlands was somehwat closer to winning...not very much better, but better!)

and you have that crazy and tall goalkeeper....
portugal should go sad.gif

QUOTE (Cyberman @ Jun 27 2004, 09:22 AM)
Yes, I´ve heard about that. But who needs sport when he has a computer? ;-)

I don't watch American football or soccer either. But, assuming there's some truth to your question (in your mind), let me give you my story (abbreviated, but not by much).

I was always a book worm, then when Z80 computers came along (about the time I graduated w/B.S. in comp.sci.), I became a computer nerd. I loved computing on mainframes daytime, and programming at home at night. I grew up never being athletic, so I never did sports or watched them. As a social event and for the commercials, I came to enjoy the Superbowl, starting in '88 in my thirties. (I still have the VHS of Bud Bowl I and other great commercials then and til 2001.)

By early 40's, I was suffering subtle but real health problems. A friend who had gotten into some holistic health concepts and practices did some tests on me, and found my problems AND that they were caused by decades of a sedentary lifestyle. The biology that I learned from this was that we were NEVER meant by the creator to live like that. I had to make significant changes to my eating habits AND start exercising. I was open to the eating changes (somewhat), but exercise? Yuk! I just couldn't keep it up-- too boring (running, etc.) Somehow I figured out or heard that if I could find a sport to do, that I could get exercise, have fun, and thereby find motivation to keep it up. I joined a volleyball league (beginners), and quickly found out how terrible a player I was. (Years before I thought I was pretty good, but that was in "picnic" vball where everything I did great turned out to be illegal!!) Since '95 when I started for real, I've been playing much almost every week, and my health has tremendously improved.

I don't read as nearly as much as before, nor compute quite as much. But doing 11 hours a week of a great sport, is SO good for me, and incredibly fun! While I hate weight-lifting (I'm 6'3 and 155lbs), when I do it, my vball game is better. So I try to take more pleasure in it when I can make myself do it.

In the last year I've had setbacks, financially, and also health. And only vball 3 hours/wk for now. But I am working toward increasing it again. Even during this quasi-down time, I'm still working on some of my game skills.

I do 2 sports, vball and BEACH vball. Those 11 hours included some of both. Now doing only indoor.

Here's where it gets interesting. (And video oriented.) In '92 I got into serious video work. "Blew" my inheritance on expensive video gear; vcrs, tbcs, etc. Started vball (indoor) in '95. Then in '96 the Olympics happened. I'd never watched sports seriously, but when I heard that my new-found OWN sport of vball was going to be shown on TV, I said WOW that'll be fun to watch. And I got my vcrs (mostly SVHS) all geared up to record all 4 vball venues plus some of the other sports that seemed interesting a bit. I edited it all (in weeks following) down to six 5 1/2 hour SVHS LP masters and made copies for friends/relatives. It was mostly vball. (50%+) (Which includes men's/women's indoor & men's/women's beach.)

Watching all this serious vball on TV in the context of being someone who does the sport himself, gave spectator sports a whole new meaning for me! I can identify with what they're doing out there, 'cause I try to do all those things myself!! And I get great instruction, inspiration (for my own game), and fun by watching these games over again. (Not that I have enough time for it.)

Then in 2000, I massively recorded the 4 vball venues again! I still haven't done the editing yet on that box of tapes, but everything is logged. In 2001, I got my mpeg2 capture card (Dazzle DVCII), and have been going crazy with it. (Capturing news and star trek off the air.) I hardly "tape" anything anymore. Got a zillion data CD-Rs with mpeg2 program streams on them (mostly). Some SVCD and XSVCDs. Then last year, discovered fcchandler's great Vdub-mpeg2. Tried Divx5, but ended up scrapping it. Have discovered frameserving, and I feel like I'm flying now, videowise. Still only have 850mhz machine, but hoping it will get me thru these olympics. Am still using Win98se, so am grateful for commercials, as files are limited to 4GB. Will create segmented AVIs from Vdub-mpeg2 (filtering, delogo-ing, etc), append groups of segmented AVIs together, then frameserve out to CCE-basic or Tsu.

I'm working like crazy to free up hard disk space in time for Aug. 11. I will cap at a high rate (probably 10mbps), edit, then reencode with CCE or Tmpgenc (frameserving from Vdub-mpeg2) and DVD-R burn when vball is not on. Am hoping I can keep up with it all. Needless to say, I won't be playing any vball those 2 weeks.

Delogo 1.3.2 is SO slow (mainly in setup labor). So I may fail in my attempt to remove the logos for my personal archive. But I will try. (Anyone care to push the loops in Delogo down to assembly/machine language?)

So, yes, I now respect many sports, and watch some. But ONLY because I NOW can DO sports, and encourage EVERYONE to do the same. Being a couch-potato, bookworm, and computer nerd is harmful to your health. Get out there, learn an aerobic sport, have fun, and get healthy! I'm just 50, and getting healthier every year! Even though I was over 40 when I saw the '96 games, I was so inspired by them, and by the promises made to me in God's health laws that He would redeem the years that the cankerworm has eaten, that I'm toying with Olympic dreams myself someday, perhaps! (His health laws include the total lifestyle which includes diet AND exercise.)

i was wrong;portugal was actually much better on the field than the netherlands team...."fly,'robben',fly...fly to oblivion" smile.gif
in fact i hated robben's stuff;he dived few times expecting to get a faul, but swedish referee is not insane person(robben is if the thinks those are fauls! wacko.gif )

advoca(a?)t took out overmars, who was the only player in your team that showed a will to do something in 1st half....that was a stupid move.....

portugal played better football and won....(that chance by deco in last minutes was kinda funny....almost 3:1...)
real fun is today:greece versus czech!
man i'm so excited that i might even cap that game...
smile.gif
(i never capped a football match before....i capped some auto/moto sports, some ultimate fighting, some boxing(i think 'klitschko vs lewis' tape is waiting to be capped though..),some tour-de-france...)

everybody is now saying that a czech-dutch game was best on the championships, and i wasn't at home when it was on...huhm...perhaps there'll be some reruns...

tcmullet ,you're right;human body is a product of evolution, and evolution is all about outsides...( smile.gif )

on the other hand,i don't swim because of health concern, but because i love to swim....
generally i say that doing something you hate is a lousy way to spend time....
if i tried to do volleyball(although my dad was big proponent of that sport, and he even coached many young teams at a local school) i would be lousy at it....
but if i tried cycling,i would be much better....(swimming is cheper,you don't need bike..heh)
tour-de-france coming......when i watch lance doing his thing,somehow i get inspired,i feel adrenaline going up...it is hard to explain,but in my family cycles/motorcycles are a usual thing,so perhaps that's it..i like 2 wheels...and these guys never stop....

i know i like it much more than 4 wheels!
driving a car is no fun...
but,i think my neck now hurts because of this PC thing,so i can't go swimming ( sad.gif )
but tomorrow or a day after it'll get better....so i may find some bike and go to my lake.... smile.gif

i'm afraid for arachnotron's heath though..he says he likes beer and PC's....
biggrin.gif
LOL!
he's not crazy,huhm...beer and PC.....YUMMI!
cool.gif
(but i can't actually drink a beer untill i had a REAL good meal....)

uhm..a friend just called me,he wants to go watch game in a nearby town....what is at my disposal that can do time-shitfting?
vdubvcr?
uhm...so help me god,it'll fail.... smile.gif

You misunderstand me (somehow); bodies are product of the supremely creative genius of God, not the scientificly impossible process called evolution. (I used to dogmaticly affirm evolution, until I learned better.)

If you love it, that's great. But no, doing something disliked is not a lousy way to spend time. I hate weightlifting, but I try to reprogram my "hater/liker" in my brain to take pleasure in it as the indirect benefits are worth the toil. The enjoyment I get from volleyball is a fringe benefit of the real benefit which is exercise. I was taught a few years ago by an older guy that you can LEARN to take pleasure in whatever you have to do. I would LOVE to get a job as a programmer once again someday. But if I have to settle for piece-meal lawn-mowing (with low pay), I should try to enjoy the particular benefits that lawn-mowing has, instead of grumbling over how low the pay is, and how non-air-conditioned the work environment is. (I'm in Fla., 95 degrees sometimes.)

I would capitalize on your love for swimming by adding just a bit of discipline to it... Identify how many hours a week of swimming you do, then pick a figure (similar to my 11 hours/week) that you feel comfortable with, and augment your swimming hours with swimming or some other sport til you raise your weekly exercise time to the number you pick. (Some would say 11 is too low.)

QUOTE

Funny you say that (lousy). I picked vball as it seemed like a sport that anyone could learn and improve in. I know short folks that do very well. And some overweight ones, too.

QUOTE

Cheaper?? 2 years ago, my car died and i bought an $80 walmart bike. How much does a swimming pool cost???

Yeah, I saw Lance back in 90s (right after cancer?). Very inspiring. If you can handle those racing-type sports, more power to ya. But to me, they're too boring. The fun dimension for me is that there's a game with points and two teams competing directly, and with all kinds of complexity to the process of play. Yes, in a race you're competing against others for the finish line, but the running itself is too monotonous-- you're doing one thing-- running (or pedaling or stroking or whatever ONE "-ing" is involved).

How can you ask for God to help you if you don't believe that He created you?? Yes, it's an expression, but one coined years ago by those who knew the truth of the psalm which said, "It is HE who has made us, and not we ourselves!"

i smell censorship wink.gif

no evolution vs. creation debates in my beloved football/sports thead. it is obviously clear that there is everything/something/nothing to say for either/neither side. those debates are actually kinda lame and "milked out" (dutch expression, sorry smile.gif )

every one is free to start a debate in a new topic about it though, although i wont participate...

so back to football biggrin.gif

yes ivo, yesterday was a sad day... anyway im supporting the czechs now too. match is starting in 20 minutes! you better hurry tongue.gif

@StephanV: I wasn't meaning to debate evolution; I4004 implied that I supported the theory; I merely wanted to set the record straight. Also, my affirmation wasn't meant in any way to reflect censorship; only a firm have-intelligently-believed-both-sides-and-researched-both-thoroughly viewpoint.

If anything, I'm guilty of starting a debate about the importance of physical activity for good health.

@Cyberman: It was your rhetorical question that got me going. I4004 merely made a response to it. What do you have to say about it? (My comments on doing sports, not evolution.)

@I4004: Good talking with you, no matter what the subject. biggrin.gif

hydroelectric plant is 7km(4,5miles i guess..mile is cca. 1600m,while nautical mile is cca. 1800m..i believe) from my habitation...
it has a lake to feed the plant too... smile.gif

ok,stop it preacher-boy,as you'll make me angry...( biggrin.gif )
i used it as an expression...it's quite common,BUT if you tell me a nice phrase without word 'god' i'll *convert* <wink>

better word for "god" may be "chance" or "coincidence"
(there i just blew my cover;i'm an atheist...)

anyway,i in recent poll dutch folks had the highest percentage of atheists in europe(if i remember correctly) what a marvelous people!
smile.gif

QUOTE

ohh..don't be scared.man....2 atheists can beat 10 catholics or protestants....LOL!
you just ask them "how did god came to being?"

but aside that(as stephan said, not important here, make new thread,whatever....but don't expect me to participate either...i mean yes,i was talking to preachers about it too( smile.gif ),and they didn't find a solid evidence to convince me,so neither will tc....i can only shake your beliefs, and you don't want that.....i wish this forum has a 'devil' smiley....hehehe...you should steal some smileys from neuron2,stephan!i'm sure he would provide!)

anway,a *miracle*(lol!) happened today;
i said greece was lookin' OK,and i know they have best defensive play overall(although ol' folks tend to be tired after the halftime.. blink.gif ) but they managed NOT to receive a goal, and gave a goal.in last minute of first extension(?no other term i could find)

so actually in my usual manner of supporting the underdog(if czechs won it wouldn't be fun..it was expected!) i was pro-greece!
(my mediterranean folks... smile.gif )
they won(surprise surprised everyone except me) and all is fine....

as said, they DO have best defense, and from time to time even can score,so i don't think portugal will have an easy match(same pair that opened the championships is closing it!)

i capped the whole thing, and i now need to revue the first period of "extra-time"(http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/euro_2004/3844467.stm
i'm assuming they know english...heh)
as a friend needed to get up early tomorrow..(so we didn't watch everything outdoors)
same page:
"But the plucky Greeks worked tirelessly to deny the Czechs, with Dellas a giant at the heart of their defence. "

dellas really deserved to score;marvellous defense player... biggrin.gif

i only watch biggest soccer championships, let it be noted.....i don't care much about eurpean national leagues or such....

o sorry. i was mainly referring to myself for censoring this thread from discussion about religion, not you censoring us or whatever smile.gif

but football again... biggrin.gif

i still think the czechs should have won, Koller could have finished it easily wacko.gif
but ok, didnt happen and if one side doesnt score, no matter how good they play, the others will... that's the law of football. also, every disadvantage has its advantage (Cruyff, 1:1 tongue.gif)

meaning portugal thinking they are already there (they dont think they can lose twice from greece, not in a row anyway) so it means greece is actually already champion... but ive been wrong the last few times so portugal probably wins blink.gif

so...

tomorrow the tour will start and of course the million dollar question is: how much overweight is Der Jan? smile.gif
