Hi. I'm in the process of making an educational multimedia application and i need to protect from conversion to avi etc. the videos that it includes on the CD. What video format is good for this? I know that nothing is uncrackable i just want to protect it from conversion by the occasional user.
I understand that wmv is convertable to avi as well as the rest of the other formats too. I don't know about Matroska or some other new format.
Any recommendations?
Thx |

RealMedia, imho, better meets your requirements. But believe me, "occasional users" have nearly no interest to educational movies. If the user is non-occasional through...
My personal opinion is, if you can not protect your application, it's better to make it free...

matroska is very easy to edit/convert with VirtualDubMod so I dont think thats a good idea... its also free and i dont know how widespread it already is (under the occasional user), so people will have to download the filters before they can use it
im not sure why you are so keen on protection though, people will find a way no matter what you try... but RealMedia would make it quite difficult yes (gosh, i hate that format )

As the others said alrady, RM would best fit your needs - but be prepared to get angry recepients. RM is a pain, not only to copy, but mostly to play.
I´d simply let it be AVI, maybe renaming it - or you look for BIK(I think that´s the actual name, smacker was another name). Fact is, those who WANT to get the video, WILL get it. No need to annoy those who only want to play it.
Add a watermark, that´d at least mark it as your property.

OK, thanks for the suggestions guys. I'll investigate the real media video.
Cyberman, perhaps you mean Bink video from Rad game tools? http://www.radgametools.com/bnkdown.htm The interesting thing with this is that it can be compiled in a self-playable exe but there's an extractor alright: http://www.newfreeware.com/graphics/825/
Somehow making the video to a compiled exe looks promising... |
