I want to copy some themes songs from vcd cartoons, which are in .dat format. I can use VirtualDub to shorten the clip first, then use Avi2vcd.exe to convert it to mpeg format, then I can burn it onto cd-r. It seems a very roundabout way to burn something starting with .dat and ending in .dat anyway for vcd viewing. Please let me know if there are any program that can cut a .dat file and save the shortened file in a .dat format without losses in conversions.

you could try it with TMPGEnc
skip the project wizard, go to file--->mpeg-tools load your file with 'add' (make sure to select 'all files' it wont see the .dat file otherwise) then slect the range you wanna keep with 'edit' define your outputfile and it should be done
im not sure though if videoCd's have a special format (are the .dat files stored in a directory, does it have an index), so im not sure if you can recreate that.... well, you figure it out...
