Some of you might remember the old PC fighting game "One Must Fall 2097", in it, you battled 1 on 1 using huge robots(called HAR - Human Assisted Robots) in some hand to hand combat.

Now, the developers of 2097, Diversions Entertainment, have published the successor of 2097, BATTLEGROUNDS. (Note: itīs a successor, no sequel, although it plays in the same universe, itīs not a complete continuation of 2097).

The principle is the same. You pilot huge robots(HARs). BUT, this time - itīs in 3D. Not like 2097, where you have one mere screen to move left and right, you have huge arenas to move completely free around.
Like 2097, most of them have built-in hazards, like "Arctic Depth" where there is water around the platform you fight on - falling into the water will mean destruction - and loss of point at least, if not game.

Various HARs to fight with, like the agile Jaguar(some will remember it from 2097), or the heavy but strong Warlord(More or less the successor of Nova) make it quite an experience. (There are 8 HARs alltogether.)

Go check it out at WWW.omf.com .

Well, so much for the advertisment ;-) Now to include something personal:
I have already bought the game(in fact, I was insane enough to preorder it when it wasnīt released, although that meant about 30$ just for shipping, as I live in Austria and there was no distributor yet), and am mostly pleased with it.
To be frank, there are things that still bother me, but DE is constantly working at the game. They had to release the game a bit earlier than they wanted, mostly because they were simply out of money - DE is a small company(about 10 members) that isnīt backed up by some big concern, and the development took quite some time(alltogether, including time they spent on a now scrapped first try(it was supposed to be OMF 2, but after they realized it wouldnīt be any good, a mere reproduction of 2097, they scrapped it and started over). All in all, theyīve been working on it for 7 years now(as I said, very few people, thus taking more time).

But donīt let that fool you - the gameīs far from incomplete. There are some issues, like spelling and crashes on Win98 computers, but long time beta tests and pre-release tests have eliminated almost all issues.

As of yet, thereīs no demo available, but it should be out soon - download the videos in the meantime and look for yourself.

One last thing, to eliminate possible further questions: No, this game does NOT have mouselook, and it will NEVER have. Mouselook wouldnīt be any good, youīve got 6 keys for left-right punch and kick/evade/jump, as well as another 4 for direction - howīd you use a mouse with THAT anyway?

Last note: As I said, I bought the game myself - didnīt regret it. It may not be perfect, but I donīt think thereīs a better game in that genre. Not on the PC anyway.

i have that game : "One Must Fall 2097"
it's freeware now

you can download everything here : http://www.omfuniverse.tk
(full version, cheats, mods, music, ...)

for Windows 2000/XP, use VDMSound : http://www.ece.mcgill.ca/~vromas/vdmsound

that game has very good music (menu.psm, arena2.psm)
i use chronos module converter 1.01 to convert psm to s3m and modplug tracker 1.16

Great game, that 2097... far, distant, glorious times! wink.gif
And the soundtracks! It was the only fighting game I used to play, since I didn't like the genre.
Badly enough I'm experiencing troubles with VDMSound on my PII 233. Maybe it's time for a little upgrade, uh?
