Hello,

I do a lot of mp4 files editing in VDub and it really bothers me the preview speed is so choppy and slow, even without any filters. The video and audio streams inside the mp4 are:

AVC, High@4.2, cabac, 45,6 Mbps bit rate, 1680x1050 res, 60 fps
AAC, LC, stereo, 192 Kbps, 48 KHz

Thanks for any ideas, explanation...

VirtualDub cannot open MP4 all by itself.
It needs inputdriver plugins for this.

At my opinion, it depends primarely on the plugin and decoders that you are using, and secondly on the resolution of the video, for making it play fluently or not.
You must also know that VirtualDub's main goal is to EDIT files, not to PLAY them. For this there are Windows Media Player and others.

To open MP4 via VirtualDub, you have three possibilities:

1) FFMpeg inputdriver plugin
does not need additional decoders

2) QuickTime inputdriver plugin
needs an H.264/AVC vfw decoder for video and an AAC acm decoder for audio

3) DirectShow inputdriver plugin
normally makes use of the Windows Foundation decoders available in Windows 7 and 8.x.

When you have installed one or more of these inputdriver plugins, then while in the Open Video File dialogbox of VirtualDub, you should first select (one single click) your videofile, and after that, at File types, you will have to select one of the plugins, before clicking OK.

MP4 is meant to be the finished product, not an editing format so seeking in mp4 is terrible. I've noticed that if I put the streams in an mkv container that they work a little better but still not great.

VideoReDo is the best editor for mp4 IMO but it is payware. It can have problems with mp4 also, especially if you try to make too many cuts.

Another software that I've found useful in cutting mp4 files is Free Video Editor. It is considered adware so you need to be careful installing it. Making sure you don't install any of the extras that it offers.

Also, I like Abrazo's 2nd option for opening mp4. Using fcchandler's Quicktime plugin, along with his aacacm codec and ffdshow set to open H264 with libavcodec.
it's easier to use. allows drag and drop and allows direct stream copy. The other options (avisynth is another one) force you to re-encode the whole video.

Thank you Abrazo and DarrellS for the input.

Not being aware off I already used the 2nd method for importing and viewing the mp4 files in VDub. I know mp4s are the final product, however NVidia's ShadowPlay recorder generates mp4s and someone who records his gameplay always tends to edit it. So here we are. But now I know that it's as good as it gets and I can sleep like a baby now wink.gif

Kindest regards,

MM
