Ok really new at this. Trying to upgrade my youtube video abilities and so it is time for video editing. At the moment this is my situation. I have a .avi video file that has audio in it already. I have an additional .wav file with edited audio on it(just playing around with volume and removing some background noise) so everything is the same length. I just want to replace the audio already in place with the alternate stuff. However when I try to open the .avi file I get a problem. It says it can't locate a decompressor for XVID. I need a codec maybe? Like I said just getting into this and no idea where I would get that or what I would need to make this what seemed basic thing to work.

Nevermind I was able to track down the stuff to make it load video. The problem now seems even more simple. When I try to take an audioless .avi file and interleave sound with it the sound comes out very stuttered. Any recommendations? This is in the new saved .avi file and when I preview it in virtualdub everything sounds perfectly fine.

The basic way of just adding an audio file to an audio-less video is

load video
video menu->direct stream copy
audio menu->direct stream copy
audio menu->audio from another file->pick audio
file menu->save avi

stuttering usually means you haven't selected direct stream copy for the video and are saving the file uncompressed
uncompressed files are huge, and slower hard drives can't keep up with the required speed needed for smooth playback
preview is normally fine as the two sources are compressed and a lot smaller
it's recommended to use explorer in details view so you can see file sizes, uncompressed or lossless ones are easily spotted

This is exactly what I needed to read. Thanks this seems to have solved things. Now I should have no trouble working in edited audio into my let's play videos. Thank you very much.
