I'm trying to splice out a piece of a larger file. It's a collection of short films that I converted from a DVD into one hour-and-a-half .avi file. The problem is that I can't get VirtualDub to start the piece I want at the spot I want. There's about 4 second of black screen between the last short and the one I want to split out, but VD simply will NOT split the file in that 4 seconds. No matter what I do, no matter where I place the mark-in cursor, I get either the last 3 seconds of the previous short, or it cuts into the first few seconds of the short I want. I've tried repeating the split, moving the mark-in cursor one frame at a time to try and hit the spot where it will give me what I want, but it just won't do it. I either get part of what I don't want or lose part of what I do want. How can I fix this? It's driving me nuts. Anybody have any advice? Please?

Use Direct Copy video will allow to split only on Key [K] frames if a Key [K] frame is available where you like to edit split the video

Else You can only edit any frames have a look at virtualdub help [F1] for ways to speed up encode to frames around the edit split only. Such as check and copy all else except frames around you are splitting

Video > Smart rendering then Video > Compression and select the same compressor as the source video (typically XviD).

malky - Thanks very much, that was exactly what I needed! Did what you said and it turned out perfect. I'll copy your instructions and save them for next time. smile.gif

vdub - Thank you for your answer, I will try to study up on these things. I'm not much of a techie, though, so I tend to get lost when things get complicated. unsure.gif
