Hi all. This is my first post. I want to crop a .mov but VD doesn't recognise that file type. I thought .movs were a common movie file type. What can I do?

Install straight quicktime plugin http://sourceforge.net/projects/fcchandler/files/

if not helps, install quicktime itself

if not helps, try other plugins

also

ffmpeg

Thanks. I've just got some malware by downloading some sw so I'm a bit worried about downloading more sw! I converted the .mov to a .avi, which is supposed to be supported by VD but got this error message.

Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'H264' (unknown)
VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable.

What on Earth does that mean?!

x264 vfw

http://sourceforge.net/projects/x264vfw/

or

http://komisar.gin.by/

directshow suitable, too, if you get somewhere malware-free directshow VD plugin and lavfilters to update directshow optionally

Before you do anything with a media file, it's good practice to determine what audio and video formats have been placed or 'contained' within your media file - which in your case is a .MOV contained file. You can find this out by installing an application called MediaInfo.

Once you know what audio and video formats have been contained within your media file you can install the required plugin within VirtualDub.

Personally, I prefer to re-mux .MOV contained files into the .MKV (Matroska) container using an application called MKVmergeGUI, instead of re-muxing them into the .AVI container.
