Win Explorer Shows Vdub 64 Thumbs Willy-nilly, and its own vids play weirdly as well

For years I've been editing my similarly-themed videos so that the first frame is a still that reminds me of the contents. In XP 32 the thumb was always this first frame; however, my new machine is running Win 7 Pro 64-Bit so I'm now using VDub 64, and now the thumbs appear to be purely random frames: If I use different codecs for the same video, the thumbs are different, none being the first frame.

Also, I can edit and add custom sound to a video just fine; but, when I end up with a completed project, VDub goes nuts if I use it to run the completed video. If I use another player to run a VDub64-created video, it runs perfectly from the first frame to the last; but, if I run the same video in VDub itself, rather than starting at the first frame I get around 50 black frames first; and, if I jockey back and forth between key frames I get wildly maddening and completely unpredictable results that make it impossible to get anything done. I wish I could keep using version 6 (my favorite); but I draw the line at having to install a virtual XP to do so.

Feedback appreciated,
Rob

You can run the 32bit version of virtualdub on a 64bis os

Thumbnails are created by windows not virtualdub, and it picks what frame to use
There's no guarentee that different versions of the os will be using the same frame number for the thumbnail
And using the first frame was pretty dumb anyway as videos starting on a black frame are quite common

'Jumping' around as you move through videos is usually caused by bframes - this is codec/settings dependant. There's a delay that's equal to the number of bframes used
Codecs like divx (and xvid) can use a packed bitstream that gets around that problem, but for many others the only real option is not to use bframes
It's only a vfw display problem though, where there's a decode-a-frame-display-a-frame system
Directshow etc can work out the right frames to display properly and in order

All that will depend on what codec you are using and it's settings - if you've used the same as you used to, then you should get the same results
That said, win7 comes with it's own preferred set of decoders that might not be the ones you'd choose to use
You can change those with Win7DSFilterTweaker http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Win7D...er/1262732488/1

You might want to check out http://babelsoft.net 's Media Preview that replaces the thumbnail generator with a more customizable one
Going nuts isn't as useful as you might imagine for a description of your problem

Thanks for the info. I have never before experienced nor imagined that thumbs could or would show anything but the beginning of any graphic file, and I have always edited out any black frames that begin a video as being grossly inconsiderate.

Sorry I offended you by describing VDub as "going nuts." Colloquially, crazy behavior is often described as "going nuts"; thus, I assure you I had not the slightest intention of seriously accusing VDub of being psychotic. In the future I'll be careful to tread more lightly so as not to offend it or any of its cadre of hypersensitive bodyguards. I shall now retire, bid my obeisances to the God of Blasphemy, then fall upon my sword. 8-(

Gee, i wasn't offended, just saying that it's not a good description for diagnosing a problem

Exact descriptions and lots of details are better, as they build a more complete picture and reduce guesswork for anyone trying to work out what's happening
