Is there any plans to bring back ASF support into VirtualDub after the release of DirextX 9 ? MS seems to be more open about this format now. They have now released the ASF specification on the web. It seems you are can write your own code to process ASF files which are not DRM protected. |

No this could be a horse of a different color. If I remember correctly the problem was that Avery reverse engineered the format. If he goes by their specs and impliments it then he can not be accused of reverse engineering it. If they have indeed put the specs out there for everyone to see. And if DRM is a problem, well if they have not changed it since their last version then it is not a problem cause their DRM has been cracked. |

a quote from avery at the 'vdub 1.5 and beyond...' thread:

One is that you must obtain a unique, revocable license key for each product -- that is not compatible with the GPL. The second problem is that as part of the license agreement you have to prohibit transcoding compressed ASF files to other formats. That is not compatible with my sense of fairness to the user. | |

We are talking about slightly different things here though are we not? The SDK is pre packaged code to allow people to incorporate a functionality quickly in their programs. It would seem unusual for the ASF specification to be part of the SDK as all the code needed for reading and writing them is in the SDK. But if it is in the SDK you are right and it is unusable. But if this is outside the SDK which at least to me seems more likely then it could be different.

Windows software developers are encouraged to use the available Windows Media SDKs, which include support for creating and reading Windows Media content including ASF files.
Hardware manufacturers may also wish to license the Windows Media Embedded PAKLeave this Web site which includes Windows Media and ASF support optimized for various embedded processors.

It says the developers are encouraged to use the SDK over the file spec. So it looks as if the two are indeed separate. Do they share the same license Avih?
