Virtualdub Crash, can't connect to capture driver

I am using a STBtv capture card on a P3 800 384meg. With drivers obtained from here http://btwincap.sourceforge.net The card works great with Virtualdub 1.4.11/1.5.0. After trying Vdub 1.5.3, it crashed(all version of virtualdub I use have at sometime crashed) and then upon restart of Virtualdub, I got an error on trying to start another video capture that "Virtualdub cannot connect to the desired device, trying all available drivers". All other programs I have with video capture abilities give me similar error messages. The only way to remedy this and start capturing video is to restart computer. Is there another way to solve this without restarting computer
