Hi there, I've recently purchased an SSD Drive and decided to do a fresh install of windows 8.1 onto it, i had virtualdub running fine before no problems, but when i open up footage I've recorded onto it, it "stutterers" or "lags" on playback and even after compression. It plays fine in windows media player etc just not virtualdub, which i am confused because it was running fine before, so i assume i am missing some kind of driver? I am new to PC's so any help would be appreciated, thanks. |

You probably know that in most video-files like AVI, MP4, MPG, WMV, MOV, ... the video and the audio are compressed by codecs (encoder / decoder).
In the older operating systems for computers (like Windows 95, 98, ...) the kind of video-codecs that were used, were "Video for Windows" codecs. The codecs for audio were ACM (Audio Compression manager).
By default, VirtualDub is using these kind of (older) codecs to work with, and also tries to use these ones to open AVI-files.
Nowadays, the Windows operating systems (like Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8) and related software (like Windows Media Player) do rather use DirectShow codecs and even more recently Windows Foundation codecs. These codecs (rather read 'decoders') are able to decode your older and also newer video's.
What you should verify, is the kind of videos that you have (I assume AVI ?) and when you open them in VirtualDub, is look via File > File Information... There you should normally see which decoders have been used to read the video and audio. Maybe you can tell us what they are ...
If you want to be able to open other type of video, then the most easy way is to install the FFMPeg inputdriver plugin for VirtualDub. This plugin has very recently been adapted by dloneranger and can open practically all type of common videoformats.
You can find it here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/virtualdub.../?source=navbar
Install this plugin by unzipping its content (choose between 32-bit or 64-bit corresponding to the VirtualDub installation that you made) and copying the files into the plugins32- (or plugins64-)subfolder of the VirtualDub installation. Take care to also unzip the "ffdlls" subfolder and its content. |
