Using Virtualdub I've compressed literally hundreds of .avi files to post on YouTube, and suddenly it no longer works. When I try to save the file as an .avi, I get this error message:

Cannot initialize rendering parameters: Out of memory

Here are the steps I always take to compress my AVI files:

1. Open the file on VirtualDub.
2. Video --> Filters --> Add --> Resize --> 1280 x 720
3. Video --> Compression --> Div 6.9.2 Codec (2 Logical CPUs)
4. File --> Save as AVI

I don't understand why it says I'm out of memory. I have tons of gigs of space on my two hard drives; I assume it's not referring to that. Any help is appreciated.

Sounds like a common mis-conception of technical terms - my wife does the same so you're not alone.

It would help to know something about your machine and Windows version.

Memory (or RAM) refers to your physical memory installed in your machine (your memory sticks), it has NOTHING to do with your hard drives whatsoever and therefore whatever space you have on them is irrelevant.
Assuming you have a Windows-flavour machine, try doing a right-click on 'My Computer' and selecting 'Properties' in the box. That will tell you what your Windows version is and how much RAM (memory) you have installed.
Anything less than 1GB of Ram is scraping the barrel a bit unless you are running Win95/WinME/Win98 (which I doubt).
WinXP (standard 32-bit) needs a minimum of 512MB RAM to run anything at all sensibly without keep swapping things in/out of the swap file; Vista needs at least half as much again (768MB) and W7 needs 1GB Ram to be effective. These are bare minimum specifications.
If you are using a 64-bit version of the OS then you can almost double those requirements.

I have 8 gigs of ram. I don't understand why VirtualDub is telling me otherwise.

Was that 8 gigs verified by Windows?
You haven't mentioned What OS you are running, whether you are running a 32-bit or 64-bit OS or which version of Virtualdub you are using.

I'm not even going to attempt to stab in the dark with your problem without knowing some basic info.

I went to My Computer --> Properties and it said I have 8 gigs of ram, if that's what you mean by verified by Windows.

I'm using Windows 7, 64-bit.

Using the latest version of VirtualDub, which is 1.9.11 (stable), 32-bit (x86) version.

I'm using the 32-bit version because the 64-bit version doesn't recognize the Div 6.9.2 Codec (2 Logical CPUs) that I use to compress my files.

there is a setting in divx for unrestrained or similar which will remove the error.

Could you elaborate? I don't even know where to begin with that.

http://www.xvidmovies.com/codec/

I just installed the Xvid codec and tried it out on the 64-bit version, since it recognizes the file (I normally use the 32-bit version.) It says it's going to take 4 hours to compress a 4 gig 3 minute long file. With DivX it would take me no more than a few minutes. Good news is, it appears to be working. Bad news is, it's definitely not viable since it hogs up a lot of computer resources and takes way too long, even at the highest processing setting.

Edit: If I try the 32-bit version of VirtualDub with this Xvid codec, I get the same out of memory error.

In vdub, go to compression, select divx, click configure, under certification you have to select Unconstrained.
But this is only available for registered version.

Use this for compressing files, its way faster and far superior than anything out there.
http://www.freemake.com/

With the latest divx, I get about 50FPS compression 720P video while 30FPS with xvid.
Dont use 64 bit anything, not vdub or compression or filters. Use 32 bit versions avoid headaches.

How do I append AVI segments with this program?

Hmm.. only problem I have is if I view the video in windowed mode there are black borders on the left and right side of the video. Kinda annoying, but other than that it seems to be working great. Any idea on how to prevent the borders on the side?

Aspect ratio problem. Try setting it manually to original or desired size. Post the video if you need further help.

What do you mean setting it manually?

By the way, I found an option to change the video from black borders to stretch, but even when I select stretch those stupid black borders are still there.

Also, if anyone can figure out my out of memory issue with VirtualDub I'd much rather keep using that program, however until then I'm going to be forced to use other programs like Freemake Video Converter with its obnoxious black borders.
