Yesterday i downloaded virtualdub 1.5.10 mpeg 2 build 18160. I have been using the original virtual dub for some time, and wanted a version that accepted mpeg 2 as input. I then got a mpeg 2 video that i captured from cable tv with an ati all-in-wonder radeon 8500 installed in a pentium 4, and reencoded the video to divx 5.1.1. The video and audio played fine, except that they were very badly dessyncronized in the resulting divx file. The original mpeg 2 file is ok, hasnt got any problems. I think its exactly the same problem as avide had. Sorry, i couldnt find that thread, so i created this one.
I not only reencoded the file, but edited it and applied some filters in the process. Could the problem be related to editing the file ? Btw, the video is a ST:DS9 episode, and i remember someone mentioning having problems with star trek episodes.
Another thing, could someone post a working link to a pentium 4 compiled version of virtual dub mpeg 2 ?
Thanks in advance ! |

I reencoded the video using exactly the same settings, codec (divx 5.1.1 pro), etc, except that i didnt edit anything and the problem appeared again... |

Sync problems are common with MPEG captures and so far there's no good solution. Please read this thread (and the other threads linked to from that one) for the explanation, and suggestions for possible workarounds.

Thanks for the reply ! I followed your suggestion and read the thread and others here related to this. To make things more clearer and give more information on my specific problem:
I was checking the files audio and video sync always with the ati file player, both for the original mpeg 2 and the resulting divx.
I have captured videos from tv exactly the same way (star trek, using ati mmc always the most recent version) but the only difference was i was capturing to mpeg 1 and was NOT having sync problems for a long time (maybe never had them with mpeg 1) so maybe this is really an specific mpeg 2 issue (although i have seen posts about people complaining about mpeg 1 sync problems too). Thats why i thought it was an specific virtualdub mpeg 2 bug, but now im not sure.
In another thread you suggest someone to change some settings from video/frame rate/source rate adjustement from : "no change" to : "change so video and audio durations match"
Well, i just did that and at this moment i am reencoding part of the video again, maybe this will solve the problem...
I was using "no change" because i was not having sync problems for a long time and frankly, i didnt even know/remember that this option existed...
I almost forgot, unlike some others peoples files, my divx file already starts desynced in the beggining of the file, (badly) and i havent checked if it gets worse at the end or not. |

I just checked the new resulting divx file, which was encoded with the "change so video and audio durations match" option enabled. Now, the movie starts sync, but rapidly becomes desync, just like everyones elses files.
Its very late here, so i will continue this tomorrow. |

As I said, right now there's no good solution. Have you tried FlasK or TMPGEnc? If you find a method that works for you, please post the details and maybe you will help others in a similar situation.
My friend's VideOh! card captures in two formats, MPEG-1 VCD quality and MPEG-2 DVD quality. Just like you, his MPEG-1 captures are in sync, but his MPEG-2 captures are not (the time stamps drift). I can only guess that it has something to do with the higher data rate, and/or CPU load.

Yes, the fact that i dont have problems with mpeg 1 must be cpu or settings related. I have a relatively fast cpu, p4 @ 2.4. Sure, if i find a solution, i will post it here.
Does anyone have a link to a p4 version of virtualdub mod or virtualdub mpeg 2 ?

Using Virtualmod 1.5.4 I import a MEP2 file to the program and frameserve to Ligos 3.5 MPEG2 encoder. There is always perfect audio sync unless one or more filters has a lag factor.
If this is the case I import the file to Video Deluxe 2.0 or MEP2004...(file must be under 2 gig in size) and ungroup the sound track from the video, manualy resync the audio and print my DVD.

I have the same problem with AverTV tuner. Judging from the error messages on opening the MPEG file in someDub (Nandub or VDMod, don't remember), there are some missing/bad frames. This is not related to CPU/RAM at all, seems that it's a common problem with tuners - may be not following the encoding standard 100%, may be something else.
My workaround is to open the file in VirtualDubMod, extract the wav file (it sucks that it can't be saved to jobs file, a stupid bug in VDM), encode it to MP3 in RazorLame (everything else should work), then encode an AVI without sound and then open it in Nandub and add MP3 track.
BTW, there seems to be is a constant 200ms desync, but this can be corrected extremely easy. |
