Hi everyone... I've been using VD for ever and I love it... I want to get a new HD camera and just about everyone uses a mpeg 4 container... Will VD ever make a version that will accept a mpeg 4? Everyone say all I'll need to do is to get a converter... but won't that just degrade my video when I edit in VD and render and compress the video?

Use the DirectShow Input Filter, it shouldn't have any negative effect on quality.

It took me like 3 days of tinkering to get my footage (h.264 in .MOV container) working in VirtualDub. Read tons of forum posts where people had the same problem, with contradicting solutions. I do know that it definitely wasn't as simple as installing that DirectShow plugin. I recall x264vfw, a plugin for .MOV files, and 2 or 3 other things being part of the trail and error process. I wish I could remember the winning combination. Heck, maybe I'm wrong, and DirectShow was the only variable that mattered in my stack. It seems every VirtualDub user starts out in a similar predicament though. I'm curious if there are any future plans to rectify the "how do I open *.xyz files" problem. Or maybe the duct tape solutions are good enough to not make it a priority. Or maybe there are legal licensing issues. Or maybe it's difficult to code for. Or maybe VirtualDub's target audience is assumed to enjoy asinine challenges, like that time I installed Linux and spent a week learning to use the command line and editing config files just to get the internet working. |

The problem is if that you don't know how videos are opened on Windows/DirectShow, it becomes very difficult to use the DirectShow plugin. There is no low level entry for this. I have written some general guide-lines on how to use it for some formats (here). It seems to me there are enough people who get it to work.
I'm sorry if this is costing you more effort than you'd like, but you will just have to accept that, if you want to work with digital video, a lot of work goes into overcoming compatibility issues.

Funnily enough I've looked at this mp4 problem a few times in the last week for some people
Normally, installing haali's splitter, and turning on h264 and aac in ffdshow gets it working
But in these cases, they both had FlipHD video cameras These install their own codecs that seem to cause a lot of trouble After disabling them mp4's worked correctly PDT IPP Video Decoder PDT IPP Mpeg Audio Decoder
If there is trouble opening files with the directshow plugin, post a screenshot of GraphEdit with the file opened in it Then the problem can hopefully be identified
Graphedit http://www.digital-digest.com/dvd/download...phedit_141.html An alternative GraphStudio http://blog.monogram.sk/janos/tools/monogr...am-graphstudio/
Here's the graphedit results for systems with the FlipHD codecs that don't work in virtualdub http://forums.virtualdub.org/index.php?act...lipentry81125
