I don't know if this has been suggested before, but VirtualDub is such an amazing program, and I've been using it for years, however as its feature list has grown so have the menus, and it has gotten a little bit cumbersome for some of the simpler tasks.

My dream would be to have a set of fully customizable toolbars like the ones in Office. Having 1 click access to all of the different save options (including the batch operations) would be great. Drop down lists for audio and video codecs would be great too.

Honestly I don't know if Visual Studio has the capacity to automate the process of, or if you'd manually have to create every control, but if there is a way to do it that isn't a complete pain in the arse, I think it would be a nice touch on an already fantastic program.

And while I'm wishing... if the toolbars ever came to fruition, it would also be really nice if there was a dropdown list you could add to one of them that would just populate with the names of any .vcf files saved in the VD folder, so you could essentially have a list of favorite processor setting to choose from, and wouldn't have to go to File -> Open -> browse -> click -> click -> click -> etc -> Open

And don't get me wrong... I appreciate the fact that you've kept VD very free of clutter over the years. It seams like every other tool that comes out has some ridiculous "puffy paint" interface, and they've added some crazy mask to it because heaven forbid your program is actually rectangular, and they've clearly spent 10x the time on making the buttons really pretty, than they did on the actual functionality of the program.

Anyway, I guess what I'm saying is Toolbars would be awesome. Have a happy 4th!

There are some controls available to set up toolbars, although I haven't used them. About the only thing I can guarantee if I implemented this is that the icon images would be ugly (at least if I drew them). What commands do you think you would put on a customizable toolbar?

Script list is something I've thought of. I don't think it would be too bad just to populate a Script menu.

Thanks for the response and happy 4th!

Well, if you did implement anything of the toolbar variety, I'd be willing to assist on the images, though I can't guarantee they'd be any prettier than what you would do. (I once had to bundle a bunch of VBA apps for Excel, and I made a bunch of custom icons for that, but that was back in Office 2000, so they were simple 16 color images)

As far as buttons/controls that I would use...

The script/vcf one would be a real dream, and save a ton of work. Maybe I'm weird when it comes to that, but I hate saving vcf files where I have my video files, in my mind those belong in the VirtualDub folder, or in My Documents, but then I have to go browsing each time since VD seems to go to the last folder I opened anything in (be it video or anything else) I suppose that could be remedied by having a preference to set a preferred source folder, a preferred save folder and a preferred script/vcf folder, but I digress...

Other one's I would be sure to use...
File -> Open
File -> Append
File -> Save as AVI
File -> Batch -> Save as AVI
File -> File Information
File -> Save WAV
File - Job Control

Video -> Mode*
Video -> Filters
Video -> Compression*

Audio -> Mode*
Audio -> Source Audio*
Audio -> Conversion
Audio - Compression*

Those are all options that I use very frequently. The ones with an * I envision as having two controls... a button to open the existing window, and/or a drop down list with the same options available as the list box in the existing window. The video compression could also have the "Configure" button added to the toolbar (though I rarely tinker with my codec settings these days) And the audio compression would be the trickiest since it would need 2 drop down lists... one for the codec, and one for the format (but I wouldn't think it would be too complex since the audio compression windows already has the same functionality only using list boxes instead) I really think the video/audio codec dropdowns would be great for 2 reasons... not only would it be easy to select a codec and configure it, but I also find myself going back to double check that I've selected a codec or the proper one. If it is displayed in a toolbar, it'll always be viewable.

I could also imagine a few other ones that I wouldn't necessarily use, but might be popular among others...

All of the File Save and Batch Save options.
All of the edit functions

Actually, the more I look at it, the more I think almost all of the menu items could be handy to different people depending on what they're using VD for.

Well, half of'em have hot keys assigned, like open and save, even batch save and job control, so not important...
But some, as you said
