This is probably long overdue, and rather hard to do, but better now than never.

I've made the decision to close the forums. For the past year I haven't been able to give them enough attention, and in case you haven't noticed, I haven't actually been here for a few months. There's many reasons for this, including a recent stretch of time where work became so busy that I wasn't able to spend time on anything else, but also that things have just gotten to a point real life wise where I need to start cutting back on time commitments that I can't keep up with, and one of them is this forum. Regularly scanning the forum was taking too much time, dealing with spammers was taking too much time, and the end result was that what little time I felt like working on VirtualDub was spent just on the forums. Also, I haven't been keeping up with other responsibilities, such as maintaining a pool of moderators or upgrading the forum software, whether it be for functionality or for security patches. I resolved long ago that VirtualDub was a hobby and needed to stay as one, and running a forum is a responsibility that I can no longer keep up with or am interested in. Therefore, it's time to close down the forum, to give proper closure to everyone who's still here.

As such, new registrations to the forums are now closed, and I'll be closing the forum down completely next weekend. But before that, I want to acknowledge all of you who made these forums an interesting and useful place to be, both for me and for everyone else who visited. When I took over the forums from the person who originally created them -- the name of which I have sadly forgotten -- I deliberately left the name as the "unofficial" boards because it was the users that were providing the most benefit, not me. That includes all who moderated the board, who posted workarounds for issues I was not able to directly address, who created tutorials, who collated links to plugins, who provided feedback on bugs and test releases, and simply those who provided frank feedback on what I was and more importantly wasn't doing. This enthusiasm is the reason that VirtualDub is still recognized and even used despite it being 16 years old, which is quite a ridiculously long time in the software world.

For issues or comments about VirtualDub, you'll still be able to contact me by email. After a recent hard drive loss -- from which, thankfully, I lost no source code -- I chucked the crappy email software I had been using and moved over to a modern email client, so I actually am moderately responsive to email again. At this point I have no idea where VirtualDub will be going, considering what little I've been able to put into it... but one thing that I can guarantee is that it will work on Windows 10 and I will make any needed fixes to ensure that. I still use VirtualDub, and I'll be damned if I end up in a situation of not being able to run my own software.

I've been using Virtualdub almost every day for over ten years, starting since at least with version 1.4.9 (still have a copy). I greatly appreciate everything you have done and will continue to do. Thank you, phaeron.

And if anybody decides to start an alternate board, please let me know.

Thanks for all your work in all this time.
You are really a programmer that I admire.
I hope that VirtualDub will survive forever, also if updated less often.

About the forum, instead of closing, can't be set as read-only?
Just to avoid lost all the contributes.

PS: Maybe I will do something in the future as alternate forum (but it need a lot of time, so no ETA).

New VirtualDub forum
VirtualDub AIO (All-in-One installer for VirtualDub and plugins)
Codec Toolbox RS (A tool to read/change merit of codecs and many other things)
Input plugins for VirtualDub / ACM codecs / VFW codecs

This would be great. If you could just "freeze" it in time that would be amazing. There's such a huge knowledge base of info on here it would be a shame for it to just disappear.

Really sad that VirtualDub will be sleeping now...

Since many years, I use that wonderful tool to capture my old Super 8 films, then stabilize, clean etc the clips through Avisynth scripts. For me, as well as for many others, nothing was useful like VD in that work, and we'll never thank you as much as we have to do.
Thank you phaeron. My best wishes for your future plans.

Please keep the forum open in read-only mode for a while - and allow spiders on your robots.txt so archive.org can do its thing.

I've been using VDub since almost 15 years, and continue to use almost only it.
Its succes is because of the purpose it was made. If you don't need to make advanced video edition (in that case you have things like Premiere, Vega, etc...), and want to do very basic video edition, it's the perfect tool.
Also contribute the pluggins and excellent avisynth support.

I hope, like several suggest, the possibility of lefting it in read only.

Thanks for all the things done these past years.

Well, that's too bad. But as long as VD still works and even might be updated once in a while...

I've been using VD since around 2000 (I'm not sure exactly), but at least since 2001. And I don't see any reason (or other software) that would make me change this habit.

Yeah, sure, I use some other software from time to time if some file doesn't want to cooperate with VD, but for my "normal" encoding needs VD is all I need. With some help from VDM for multi-audio-track-files.

So, thank you for this great program and all the years of support in this forum (also to all the moderators and contributors)!

No, it wasn't him. He was instrumental in making it a success early on, and did a lot of admin work as well as monitoring the original mailbox at matroska.org, but I don't think he was the one who originally hosted it.

I'll think about leaving it up in read-only mode for a while. As for loosening robots.txt, mmm... I probably originally did that for two reasons, one to reduce server load, and another to reduce attractiveness for spammers. Neither would be an issue in read-only mode. Security might. I wonder how the board would work with everything chmodded 444 and the database access swapped to read only.

Received a request for the forum posts -- I should be able to accommodate that, but it'll have to wait until I can set up a local SQL server to do the necessary extraction from the database. Big SQL queries on the web host don't work too well.

Ok so your tired of Virtualdub code fair enough after all the years you have developed Virtualdub, it would bound to have happen. For analytical minded people (developers) I'm sure this would happen sooner else they burn out trying to keep going. For you it has been gradual over the years this we can and have seen over time

Virtualdub Development is is going to stop altogether or are you going to appoint someone to take control of the code so development can continue. Whether that be a fork or with the actual development code

Also needed would be features and idea to be implemented and roadmap if it mentions others ideas etc. Also any other data for Virtualdub development progress. Lets agree now Virtualdub has wound down over the last few years to near zero new builds or features. This we take to be a tired coder in need of a rest from Virtualdub which you yet haven't been able to do. Best thing if this is what you need is to break from it. Sure come back when you like but would need to work as a team, so in future then you don't burn out again from Virtualdub code

The forum the original person started it with you in mind to take control of it that is obvious. And we thank you for doing so and keeping it going so long. Now it is time for another person to take control. Now there is only one and that is easy to see, who is here more than anyone else to look after the forum dloneranger

Easy then to keep the forum as is and make dloneranger the admin or even the owner if that is what you prefer. This is something you should have done years ago for the forum future that now can be done to keep the forum running. I'm sure it is nothing for dloneranger to do since already is the only moderator looking after the site. Admin or Moderator one has more control than the other

You then also stay admin or become user Phaeron or other as you need. I hope dloneranger doesn't feel pissed with you for this not been so. I guess nothing much has been said or this would have been written. The forum then stays as it is dloneranger becomes admin or takes control if so you send him all data needed etc. The forum stays open there is no interruption. Unknown who hosts Vitualdub forum likely it is on free parking as long as the site lives. More reason then to keep it as it is give the reigns to dloneranger let him be the admin and the new owner of the forum for years to come. That said should always have in place in case needed a plan for the next person to take control obviously to kept up to date)

Sure the forum will change as you say it has been needing it for years I'm sure dloneranger as we appreciate that. Lets hope any updates mean we don't need javascript active and google is not used at any stage other than what it is a spider bot
