After over a year, I've updated VirtualDub-MPEG2 to the latest stable core, which is currently version 1.6.19. I've also added the ability to import MPEG Layer II audio files, as some others had requested.
If you see any bugs, please post them in this thread.

Nice work! And I see the ASF_VBR_FIX code doesn't mess up the keyframes anymore . |

@neuron2: You're very welcome.
@Moitah: I don't recall changing anything there, but it's been a year, so it's quite possible that the code I had on my hard drive was no longer the same as the code on my web page.
@everyone: I just discovered a bug which screws up seeking in the audio after you have imported an MPEG audio file. Meaning, any non-zero position in the compressed audio stream is not calculated correctly. I'll have it fixed ASAP.

OK, the seeking issue seems to be fixed now. But there may be other issues with imported audio files, especially 22050 Hz and 44100 Hz MPEG audio, which I wrote about in the change log. I don't have a solution yet, but I'm thinking about it...

I am running Windows Vista 32-bit. When I set up a shortcut on the start menu for VirtualDub.exe, there is no icon. When I try to change icon, I get a message saying that VirtualDub.exe contains no icons. There are icons for auxsetup.exe and for vdub.exe but not for VirtualDub.exe. I extracted virtuald.ico from the source files and reference that as my icon to solve the problem. I have used your program for a long time to create the videos on my website. Thanks for your hard work and great program!

Well, of the files I'm distributing, only VirtualDub.exe and VirtualDub.vdi are modified. The rest are the same files from Avery Lee's official package.
I have a strong suspicion that your problem was caused by me using an ancient version of the UPX packer (version 1.24w)! The newest UPX is 3.01, so I'll try repacking the exe with that, and upload a new zip file tonight.

I have the same Windows Vista icon problem with VirtualDub.exe from Avery Lee's official 1.6.19 and 1.7.2 packages. Thanks for looking into it.

In that case, changing UPX versions may not help. I know Avery Lee was using a newer version because I couldn't unpack his exe with my old UPX.
I uploaded my new exe packed with UPX 3.01 anyway: http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/stable
I don't have access to a machine running Vista, so I'm afraid I can't debug this. Maybe Avery can, since it also affects the official VirtualDub. I wonder if you are the only one who has reported it?
EDIT: As an afterthought, try this one too: http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/VirtualDub.zip
That's the original VirtualDub-MPEG2 executable which was output by Visual Studio 6, before I packed it. If that exe works, then the problem is definitely the UPX packer. Otherwise, I'm not sure...

The icons in VirtualDub.exe (from the original VirtualDub-MPEG2 executable which was output by Visual Studio 6, before you packed it at http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/VirtualDub.zip) show up in Windows Vista as they should. If you create a shortcut to VirtualDub.exe and right click the shortcut and select Properties and click the Change Icon button, 14 icons for VirtualDub.exe are displayed.
The icons in VirtualDub.exe (from the new exe packed with UPX 3.01 at http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/stable) do not show up in Windows Vista as they should. If you create a shortcut to VirtualDub.exe and right click the shortcut and select Properties and click the Change Icon button, a message saying "The file VirtualDub.exe contains no icons." appears.
Another weird note: After deleting the IconCache.db and rebooting, I was able with all the VirtualDub.exe versions to create a start menu shortcut to VirtualDub.exe that appears with the default icon even though according to Windows Vista "The file VirtualDub.exe contains no icons."

Hmm...
In Windows XP, when I make a shortcut to the unpacked exe, I also have a choice of 14 icons. (Although 13 of those are just the pictures for the nav buttons; they're not really meant to be program icons.)
With the UPX-packed exe, I still have a choice of one icon, yet you have none. I guess I'll submit this as a bug report to the UPX people, with a link to this thread. Hopefully someone involved with UPX has Vista.
Thanks for your help isolating the culprit.

After some googling, I found the problem. UPX has problems when compressing the icons and has to be told not to compress any icons.
This example worked without losing the icons: upx --compress-icons=0 -o VirtualDub.exe OriginalUnpacked.exe
According to UPX 3.01 documentation under DOS/Windows you must use '#' instead of '=' when setting the environment variable because of a COMMAND.COM limitation. (I got the same result with '=' and '#'.)
Please let me know if you repack without compressing the icons so I can download and test it for you in the Windows Vista environment.

I just uploaded a new package, this time using "UPX --compress-icons=0" to compress VirtualDub.exe. Testing it under Windows XP, I see all 14 icons available.

Under Windows Vista I also see all 14 icons available and can create a Start Menu shortcut with no problem. Success! Thank you!
